2014 m235i engine seized?
Hi Guys,
I recently had an oil leak coming from the oil filter. I checked the oil level and came up below halfway. I topped up 1L and drove to work and booked in service for that same afternoon. I drove very lightly to a mechanic about 30min drive away and he then informs me that it had less than 1L of oil. I get the car back and 1 day later the engine light turns on. I call my mechanic and tells me it's most likely a short in some electricals because he degreased the engine bay and washed it down because oil ended up all over the place. Unfortunately, this was on Christmas so he and everyone else was closed so I could do nothing about it. I drove the car for 2 days, very lightly, and was running much smoother and more responsive. I decided to "give it a little" nothing too strenuous and nothing I haven't done before. The engine turned off on me. I turn it back on, it was a very rough start and then died on me again. Did this one more time, got 20m, and died. It won't start at all now. Tried to manually crank the engine, no luck. My mechanic is dumbfounded and everyone I speak to is pointing to the engine seizing or a spun bearing. I'm no mechanic, nor do I know what a spun bearing is lol - I'm now looking for an experienced BMW specialist. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Thanks Steve |

Degreasing an engine isn't uncommon and if done correctly, shouldn't be an issue as all eletrical sensors and such get covered.
That said, there were no warning lights? CEL? Because even with the low oil something should've came on. And yes, spun bearings don't seize engines, it could wreck them though... So don't drive it. |

I had a similar leak happen when I first got the car. Caught it in time before anything serious happened, but it caused issues later on. It was due to using an aftermarket mobil1 filter- the large o-ring is a different thickness from OEM and doesn't create a proper seal, even when the cap is torqued to spec (25+5nM)
Check the belt and signs for pulley wobble. The oil may have gotten into the lower MAP sensor, camshaft position sensor, the alternator windings or many of the main lines leading to the alternator. Main voltage might not be getting properly supplied to the computer or sensors. Whether that's due to the oil bridging contacts or burning something out completely will take a good amount of troubleshooting. |

It's not uncommon for engine seizing when doing OFHG replacement

BMW issued a TSB noting that the oil pump needs to be primed using the following procedure after completing work like this. See page 2 of the TSB regarding oil pan gasket replacements, and oil filter housing gaskets. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...51166-9999.pdf

Did a BMW dealer do the work or did you or an independent shop do the work? The oil pump should have been primed after the repair.
