Exhaust or Midpipe?

Hello, I’ve got a ‘17 M240i and so far for my exhaust system the only mods I did was VRSF catted DP, cut the cylinder resonator on stock midpipe. Otherwise my exhaust end is stock and the secondary resonator (square) is there. In terms of opinion would I get the most quality sound from swapping out the midpipe or doing a simple axle back like MBRP. I overall don’t want to spend a ton on the car just to make it louder but the way it sounds w the badically stock midpipe and muffler is quite muffled for my liking. Anyone have any recommendations on what they have on and how they like it? Or if anyone took a similar path to me and chose either to do the midpipe or exhaust only for some added sound. I daily the car and don’t want it obnoxiously loud but I love a good tone.

Thanks in advanced for any feedback or opinions.

I've heard good things about the Remus exhaust, and I have the MPE axleback and like the tone of it coupled with my VRSF catless DP. Dinan has a mid pipe option but I think that might bring you more on the louder side. I dont know. My preference was always do have the high flow downpipe and an axleback, not touching the mid pipe section.

Appreciate the feedback I saw the Remus the other day when I was looking and I like it because I believe it was a catback, while the other exhaust I looked at, MBRP was an axle back. Eventually I feel if I can get the square resonator cut from the midpipe that would be more than enough from that.

You can buy just the Remus axleback from numerous places.

I had the Remus axle back for a while on my M240i and it scratched the itch for loudness, then I got a cat less down pipe which took it to the next level. Kept the stock resonators though.

+1 on the Remus axle back— I have similar setup (HF downpipe, but kept the resonators) and it turns heads. Combine with w burble tune and almost too aggressive.

The Remus is a very nice growl, you won't be disappointed. Quick plug for XPH— Mike is great for any questions, and no delay on shipping.

Appreciate all responses especially all of the remus salesmen lol. Im currently doing a interchiller/retune on my f80 and plan to snag up an exhaust for the 240 soon after. Love the positive feedback for Remus, it may have to be my option.

It's a pretty good sounding exhaust. I still recommend them even with the headache their customer service put me through.

Non-res with a catted downpipe sounds great. Not sure if catless would introduce too much rasp but I can tell you my setup has no rasp.

My 240i is the same years as yours Kami. Stock downpipe Dinan mid and exhaust. No drone. Great sound, louder on sport and sport + but to my old man ears, perfect. I actually prefer to drive windows down, no tunes.
Cutting the other resonator will definitely improve the sound. Cheaper way to go. Not what you want, take the next step with Remus or a Dinan set up. Picked up mine on this forum.

Or, M Performance Exhaust if you want to stay OEM. Just another option...depending on what your objectives might be.

Remove the 'little' square muffler..... cheaper option.
This will sound great.

Not sure if you want the quiet/loud function.
I don't think the M Performance muffler has the valves to open/close when needed.

Remus does sound good though....

Axle back only opens a portion of the exhaust. For full effect you want the DP and Catback! Otherwise it's just bottlenecking the exhaust! Opening it up the entire length is where you gain performance, and sound, lol.

Good Luck!

If i had to pick one, i'd pick the axle back but ultimately you need catted downpipe with a full catback for the best sound

I’ve gone catless down pipe with a Remus back box and the car sounds great. Had to delete the cat heating start because the cold start was beyond brutal! I’m tempted to go non resonated in the midpipe now but worried that may be too much

I recently did the same thing and turned off the cold start roar via MHD. Way way better.

I’ve seen axle back can report less power gained, does it overall generally matter too much or is it just limiting my how much comes out the exhaust for the sound?

MBRPs axle back is rlly affordable but i see no cat backs that are genuinely closer to 1k than 1.5-2k. but once you start considering a midpipe too you’re looking at way more $ than most want to spend.

It's ridiculous what they go for when you know how much they have in the cost wise...

Active Autowerke catted DP + Dinan mid pipe here, still oem cat back... no CEL after almost a year.
I get lots of compliments on the sound, and if I drive like an average human in comfort or eco you wouldn't know any of that's been changed by the sound inside the car.
Get on it some, or put it in sport, and she starts to make her presence known.

I often think about putting on the MPE exhaust, but honestly the sounds I get now put a smile on my face, which makes it hard to justify putting more expense into exhaust sounds when there's a B58 under the hood that wants to make more power, and i still need some aesthetic updates to individualize the car a bit more
