Engine spec change for 2016 models

I was browsing the 2 series configuration page on BMW Canada and noticed a slight change in engine power for the 2016 model year. Both the 228i and M235i have a slight drop in torque but an increase in MPG (with the exception of the RWD 228i). Anyone know if these figures are accurate or what's behind the change? My guess is BMW had slightly detuned their engines to help meet fuel efficiency goals.

Here are the specs as listed for automatics:

2015 BMW 228i Coupé - 258 lb-ft - 8.4 l/100km (28 mpg)
2016 BMW 228i Coupé - 255 lb-ft - 8.4 l/100km (28 mpg)

2015 BMW 228i xDrive Coupé: 258 lb-ft - 8.7 l/100km (27 mpg)
2016 BMW 228i xDrive Coupé: 255 lb-ft - 8.4 l/100km (28 mpg)

2015 BMW M235i Coupé - 332 lb-ft - 10.2 l/100km (23 mpg)
2016 BMW M235i Coupé - 330 lb-ft - 9.9 l/100km (24 mpg)

2015 BMW M235i xDrive Coupé - 332 lb-ft - 10.0 l/100km (24 mpg)
2016 BMW M235i xDrive Coupé - 330 lb-ft - 10.2 l/100km (23 mpg)

The new torque figures are listed above in lb-ft, just before the mileage. So the 228i has gone down from 258 to 255 and the M235i from 332 to 330. Listed HP has remained the same. Obviously not a huge drop but I was surprised to see it as well as the alleged improvement in fuel efficiency.

I'd also add I only posted the MPG for automatics since it wasn't listed for the 2016 manuals.

THanks I understood that but would be interested to see the power too (h-p / k-w).

My 2015 228i has the N26 engine vs the N20. Same engine but slightly different emissions protocol (I forget the acronym…SULEV?) that, according to Dinan, makes slightly less torque at peak rpm. I was a little distressed by this until I experienced the very pleasing effect of a Stage 1 tune on my car. Anyway, these variances in engine emissions standards might account for the numbers cited by the OP.

I'm surprised you haven't replaced your catalytic converter on your N26 already, at the rate your mods are going :P

Replace the catalytic converter? With what? I don't think it would be a smart idea here in eco-conscious southern CA. I might get performance springs but then I'm done, I think…

Interesting, I didn't know there was super low emission variations of the engines in our cars. I guess Canada is now getting them by default. Thanks for the info.
