No active engine sound in 2018 M240i?!
I have had my new 2018 M240i MT now for 11 days and I'm coming from a 2015 M235i 8AT. So I was quite familiar with the active engine sound in the '15 which I lived with for about 3 years. However, I am almost convinced that my '18 M240i does not produce active engine sound! I did the standard tests of switching from Comfort to Sports and Sports+ modes at 3000 RPM and there is zero change in sound!
Do others with 2018 M240i's hear the sound?! Is it possible that because the B58 engine naturally has a louder sound that they decided not to use ASD? Did they possibly change the behavior of ASD in the 2018 model so that it comes on at higher RPMs (which I'm not yet hitting in sustained fashion due to being in the break-in period)?

Yes, it’s there…
I have the same 2018 except I have a vert so the cabin noise is a bit busy at speed even with top up. The majority of my drive time in this car is with top down and music up so ASD is not much of a factor. However with top up, no music and using bimmercode to disable ASD, there is a slight difference in sound no matter what mode the car is in. I know others hate it but personally for me there is not much difference in sound either way to leave ASD permanently disabled.

Do you guys notice a difference in sound between driving modes? Maybe the issue is that the sound is there in all modes unlike the M235i, which makes it harder to notice?

I coded mine off so long ago I'm tempted to code it back on just to see ... but I really didn't like it on a 4-series I had as a loaner.

ASD = clipping cards on bicycle wheel spokes
Pretty cool if your pubescent but really stupid for an adult. Why not just make VROOOOOOM sounds with your mouth if you need noise to convince you that you have a great car? Can't believe BMW wasted engineering $ to do this. Will be immediately disabled on my next Beemer purchase.

A couple of weeks ago I had the software update under the recall notice. It wiped out all the BimmerCode changes I had made, among other things. When I was redoing the BimmerCode changes, the ASD module was different--it seemed that the default option was off. Not wanting to mess with a good thing, I left this alone.
So my 2018 2040i initially had ASD, which I had canceled via BimmerCode, but apparently there has been a programming change that cancels it. |

It's there on my 2017. very subtle though - sit in park, rev it to over 2000 rpm, click between modes. You'll hear a deeper tone in Sport mode

These exact steps don't produce a perceptible change in my 2018 car (they did in my 2015).

While this discussion isn't specifically about the merits of ASD, I installed the TechnicPnP ASD removal harness within a few weeks of getting my m235i and have never looked back. I'm on the same page as NVHoo. I'd be a bit surprised a software upgrade from BMW or a 2018 MY change made the default for ASD OFF instead of ON, but if that's the case, I'd count it as blessing.

BUT, I actually don't *want* it! I am just being geeky and wanted to know whether there is a change in MY 2018 compared to 2015 or if there was something wrong with my car. It was very loud in the m235 and, as long as my car is acting normally, I'm happy it's not so here.

My 2017 240 doesn't seem like it has ASD but more likely it's there and just too subtle for me to notice. |

My whole instrument cluster failed and had to be replaced, it would not reboot and was dead. A month later i got the recall notice, brought it in and the dealer told me that my firmware was updated when they replaced my cluster.

We finally got some good weather here and I took my '18 m240i RWD for a spin yesterday. Saw this thread today and thinking back, I didn't notice ASD one bit. I was even paying attention for the difference in exhaust sound between Comfort and Sport/Sport+ while at a stop sign, and ASD never even crossed my mind. I noticed it right away in a m340i xDrive that I test drove last year, so it's either very subtle like others are suggesting or simply not there anymore.
Btw, I am also still in break-in period, so maybe it hasn't "come alive" yet.
