17x9 Square Setup

Hi,

Wondering if et 42 is the maximum offset I can run without poking. Has anyone tried anything from 35-40?

It looks to me like 17X9 ET42s do have a bit of poke:

The front looks like it has a 10mm spacer so effectively et 32 right? I have camber plates, and am lowered... so I think it will tuck.

Bimmerworld sent me that photo when I asked them what their 17X9 ET42 wheels would look like on my M240i. They didn't mention anything about spacers, lowering, or camber adjustment, so I assumed the car was stock in those regards.

The images below show an 18X9 ET42 with a 255/35-18 tire on the front of my car. The car has -2.6° front camber and a front drop of 1¼". I think they show that camber adjustment does make a significant difference in how much the wheel and tire stick out, especially at the top where poke can appear most noticeable.

As a fellow member of the 17x9et42 mafia, I can expand that this setup is common because (1) it also works on the E36M3, a car that has way more high end wheel options, (2) it fits a wide 255/40/17, which is one of the most common tire sizes for the extreme street tire category, and (3) you can rotate them in a square setup that's only a little pokey in both the front and the back.

17x9et35-38 is doable, but there aren't many wheels out there in that spec. If you don't mind aggressive camber, lots of poke, stretched tires, and/or rolling the hell out of the fenders, you might even be able to run as low as a 17x9et20, but there might still be some rubbing.

I'm actually just doing this so I can run 255/40 square. I have a 18x8.5 setup right now and I think 255/35 might sacrifice the sidewalls a bit.
