sometime ago someone on FB suggested me to run 8.5j et35 with 245/40.
Can't find him now, but pretty sure he said it will not rub. So hopefully someone can confirm this here as I am about to get this set for my f22.

Without any modifications, it will most definitely rub in the front with a 245/40R18 (much taller than the 245/35R18). Even the 245/35R18 will rub and a 225/40R18 will likely rub. If a 8.5j et35 with 245/35R18 (or 245/40R18) fit without issue, a vast majority of us would be running that.

Would this mean that to be sure a 17x8 square with a 235/40 et 40 should work

I seem to remember seeing a handful of people running this setup with all stock suspension. Seems to work for some, but not for others. So frustrating.

Yeah. 245/40 will be taller than 245/35 but probably a little bit narrower on any given wheel as well. How those things play together, I would not even presume to predict. Totally likely it is individual tire dependent.

There are calculators available online, but so many of the important variables are neither easy to measure nor easy to find online.

https://www.wheel-size.com/calc/

I've committed to a choice now so I'll just add my experience for any reference value going forward.

Looking forward to hear your thoughts. I think I am going to have to settle for 235/40s. Which, should be fine for a daily car that is driven spiritedly every now and then. Maybe by the time I need a new set of summer tire's I'll have some light suspension mods to fit 245s all around.

Just checking in here to update. Finally have some summer like weather this weekend so just installed my new summer wheels today. 245/35R18 Potenza S001 RFTs (yes I know many people here hate RFTs, this is not the place for that debate) on 18x8 ET40 wheels all around. Have only driven for a couple hours so far, but no sign of rubbing on my completely stock car. Can fit my finger between the wheel and the strut, so no worries there. At full lock the shoulders don't come close rubbing on the inside liners. The only possible rubbing I have yet to test for is at significant lock under compression, like hitting a big pothole during a tight corner, but I'm not expecting it to be an issue and will certainly update if it happens.

Biggest PITA has been getting the car to recognize the new TPMS sensors. Lots of failed tries but it finally seems to have got it now. Will see if it still remembers tomorrow LOL.

Will post some pics soon. Cheers.

If it becomes a problem, TPMS is optional in Canada. The car can be coded to ignore the TPMS signal and rely on the old fashioned wheel rotation sensors instead. You will still get a low tire warning but it wont tell you which one.

Thanks, good to know. I was considering asking about that as it took quite a few tries to get it to recognize the new sensors, but everything is working properly now. I expect I'll have a bit of aggravation with this every spring and fall now as I switch back and forth between wheels.

The midpoint between strut and fender is 39mm, so ET40 wheels will be the closest non-custom size you'll find to the ideal offset.

That seems to be the case. After endless hours of researching this, and now being able to see on my car first hand, I would guess that 245s on 8 inch rims will probably work with anything from 38-42 offset. 8.5 inch rims will reduce the margin for error significantly however. I expect 18x8.5 ET40 would probably still work on my stock suspension, but I can't say I would be confident that an 8.5 with 38 or 42 offset would work, in fact most of what I have read suggests the former at least for sure won't work without some additional mods.

The weather here has been kind of rainy and miserable so no pics yet, but after a week of driving I can say one thing for sure. Having 245s in the front totally transforms the handling characteristics of this car very much for the better. Best car mod I've done in a long, long time.

“totally transforms the handling characteristics of this car”

I hear this a lot and would love to know what it means.

Can you share more specifics that detail the differences?.

I’m asking as someone who believes the car feels better after an oil change (and I’m quite sure it doesn’t).

Basically just better perceived feedback through the steering (such as it is with the electric assist) and noticeably less understeer. Feels more balanced, for lack of a better term.

And, if you did an A/B test, I expect you'd find your wider tires produce shorter stopping distances.

While going faster is a popular general topic, stopping shorter is rarely discussed. In terms of safety, I think that's the unsung hero of wider front tires.

18x8 ET40 245/35 square

Took a few pics today for anyone who is spending countless hours on these forums reading about what works. Car is stock. No rubs.

Thanks for sharing what works; we all need to understand as much as possible about this subject.

Completely off-topic, I'm surprised to see the trees in the background fully leafed-out in Winnipeg in early June. I suppose the species that do well so far north are adapted to the shorter growing season.

I'm happy to have been able to use these forums to steer me in the right direction tire wise. It was not nearly as simple as on my previous 3ers.

OT we had a pretty serious drought last summer, and we have had some pretty serious flooding this spring. I think the trees are happier with now.

Looks really good. I prefer a little more of a concave wheel but this really looks good.
..and thanks.. this helps for when I get to this point.
