I'm hooked

This past weekend I finally got around to installing bolt-ons on my M235i, and 2 days ago I finally flashed tuned it. Dear lord, did this car wake up. I found the car to be fairly quick in stock form, and honestly didn't get bit by the mod bug right away. It definitely felt like there was a something left on the table, as with all stock turbo cars, but I wasn't expecting such a difference. Now I'm no stranger to fast cars. I've driven / ridden in a modified Ferrari 488, several mclarens, 911 turbos, Lamborghinis, etc. I consider myself to be a bit jaded when it comes to fast cars, but this little 2 series honestly impresses me. It really does suck you back into your seat, and 2nd gear pulls are rowdy. If any of you are on the fence, do it. Don't think about it, just do it. You will not be disappointed.

Mods:
VRSF Intercooler & charge pipes
Wagner catless downpipe
Hydra Motor Works ecu flash

Haven't had her on a Dyno yet, but the butt Dyno says it's a good number.

Just got back from a cruise, have a stupid smile on my face, and had to share

This will be my next step with my 235. I had a 2000 Audi S4 a little while back and did a stage 2 tune, night and day difference. Nothing like driving a car that puts you in your seat with a smile on your face.

2019 is the year I flash, can't wait!

I remember in our MK7 GTI, we went from the JB1 plug and play, which added like 20-30hwp/50tq, to an APR flash and it was night and day. The power delivery was much smoother, and strong until redline, it also almost added double the power/tq of the JB1, it was insane how much better the flash felt at part throttle, too. Hoping for the same experience going from the JB4 as my tuner, to an actual flash tune. Will still use the JB4 for boot/meth control, but that's about it.

Thanks. As crazy as it sounds I don't know shit about cars. I brought my car to a local shop to put a down pipe in my car and a tune. Before the shop I put in the Dinan P3 power package which includes

Dinan Chip Harness
Dinan Intercooler
Dinan Air Intake
Dinan Big Turbo
Dinan Exhaust.

Now after the shop they put in a down pipe and took out the Dinan chip harness and put a flash tune in. I honestly don't know what tune he put in. I have to ask him. But 355 whp is not what I want to be on. There is a company called bigboostusa.com that has a kit that can achieve 520 whp but the only thing about that is I have to take out the downpipe I just got and use there downpipe with there turbo. One thing the guy that did the dyno said my air/fuel ratio is running lean. I don't know what that means but he said I should look into buy a new fuel pump because maybe the stock one can't hold much power. So I'm trying to figure out if I can achieve my desired whp (520) without having to buy that kit.

out of everything that's been said 'smooth power delivery' really whet my appetite for a tune. like OP i'm also happy with how quick the car is out of the box, and i've had NO experience with fast cars lol. My last car was an e92 325i and before I was driving an i30 :P. So a tune really sounds like it will blow me out of the water. But since it's not pressing, I really don't wanna spend too much dollaridoos on something that could potentially reduce the lifespan of the engine. Mine's a '15 and out of warranty anyway so I'm strongly considering doing the tune sometime in the next 6 months.

I could spend a whole day researching on flash vs piggyback, pros and cons, etc. But specifically for the m235i n55 engine, can someone give me the lowdown on which i should go for? The dinan guys where I live aren't cheap and jb4 seems like a risky route. But would i get similar power delivery on the basic stages of each?

Also does this affect fuel consumption? I'm still getting my head wrapped around going to the fuel stand every 400-450kms and 98ron in Australia cost as much as liquid gold now that the AUD is sh*tfaced. If the tune is gonna wipe out some of the fuel efficiencies, then this will make it an easier decision for me to make.

The most simple answer IMO is: and I've had different versions of both piggy and flash tunes on different platforms (like many here)…
1) Piggy, is a boost controller, that's what it does and they do it very well. So if adding some boost is your goal, piggy is a good start.
2) Flash is a tune, it can control boost, timing, fuel and even cam timing (and much more). This is a far more complete tuning strategy that allows unlimited control.
3) Yes, all performance tunes affect gas mileage negatively to some degree, more air equals more fuel, has to be that way.

Hopefully this very brief answer helps.

I'm moving back to Ontario for a few year for a career opportunity. Plan to be at Mosport (Canadian Tire Motorsports Park), Shannonville, Montreal and Cayuga events throughout next year. We should link up!

My car will stay in storage, here, and plan to fly back and drive it across the country in April.. weather depending, worst case is May.
