M235i Muffler Delete - Initial Thoughts
Hey Guys,
So after sifting through the countless posts about Exhaust setups, I decided to bite the bullet and just get the delete done. Here is my thought process and kinda review thus far. Car: m235i Standard, zero engine mods (yet) Cost/Job: $250 w/ Stainless Steel Tips. Roadway Exhaust Canberra. They literally just cut the muffler out welded in a flange, job done. Everything else is not touched. Back when I was a little younger I drove a number of performance cars, S15/14/13, WRX, Skylines etc.. so Im aware I would be moving into the realm of a much louder sound than standard and I have some experience with Modified cars. Thoughts prior to getting it done: Reading through the forums I was worried about drone, I was worried that it could be a tad obnoxious. Overall I was worried about it being a little to loud, however I wasnt worried enough I guess not to do it because after all I could always revert and I would loose 250$ Not a massive deal. If I purchase the MPE and Im not happy with the sound there goes 2k + tips and Im not happy and my pockets are sad and Im sad, this would be a sad day for all. Thoughts after getting it done: Its actually no where near as loud as I thought it was going to be. Is it loud? Yes it is. Is it roughly as loud as any performance car with a exhaust? Yep spot on. The note is superb, even the muffler shop said it was one of the nicest sounds they have ever heard from a BMW. Does it drone, hmmm well this I feel comes down to the driver and how much you let things bother you. I dont find it any worse than any other cars ive driven, so to me its not an issue. To some one who has owned quieter cars then it possibly may drone because there not used to it. At the end of the day this car is a 240kw Beast and not a family Ford Falcon I want it to remind me its tuff every time Im in it. Here are some pics and Vids. driving through the city had a guy wave me to put my window down.
"fk that sounds sweet, what kind of exhuast is that" this has been a great success. |

I appreciate you sharing your own experience with this. I've been on the fence with this and keep flip flopping between doing a muffler delete, the fabspeed bypass muffler or the M performance exhaust. Thanks to your words and videos, I just made an appt for next Friday to do the muffler delete.
Have you thought of hacking off the resonator to get a louder tone? |

Downpipe will make a big difference. In my various tests I ran open exhaust just to hear it. The drone is super magnified.
As a comp, it droned More than my Evo X running catless and Agency Power full exhaust. You can search the threads here. Starvmarv and a few others can attest. |

Ill Try get some over the weekend Update after some driving: Firstly, the wife was not impressed when it started in the garage. Cold start in a 2 car garage sounds awesome to me, not so awesome to her. I did a some decent driving today around town in traffic and cruising a few places. The sound is great, If you love the burble and want it at specific times you have to down shift at points in the revs to hit it perfect other wise its really not noticeable. I had 2 people in the back for about a 25k drive through the city and some decent straights and they said "No worse then a Skyline or WRX" I really feel this is dead accurate. |

Curious to how this will sound when catless. Been looking at various vids, but hard to tell.
I'm coming from many catless cars and more agressive exhast notes (s2k, evo, 370z, etc). I can't imagine it being much louder than those cars. My car is louder with the catless, but still too quiet for me. Has anyone retained the exhaust valve on the driver side with the muffler delete option? Wondering if it would still make it quieter....or actually louder when the exhaust is only going through the passenger side... |

If user is used to muffler deletes on other cars and he like it, the M235i one is not that bad. Sound is not obnoxious and drone is reasonable (for a muffler delete)

I unplugged mine, so I cant comment how it would sound with it fitted.
However you wouldnt want it any louder on cold start it really is booming for 5-10 sec. |

What diffuser is that?
If they made a quad tip diffuser I totally would've gotten one. |

No...you aren't going to get flames out the back. I don't get why people want to do that. Have to introduce source of ignition in order to get flames like a flame kit or some nonsense like that.

You can probably tune it to pull ignition and dump fuel on lift - basically exaggerate the current overrun programming.
Flames are when unburnt fuel is dumped and then ignited by the hot exhaust. Then you'll need a completely straight through exhaust. I had fire in my Evo X. |
