I'll add my experience with VRSF's 6" Race IC (I'll call it R-IC) into the mix here. Today, I finally had a chance to install the R-IC. I went about removing my Wagner Evo 1 IC and performed pre-install test-fits. The R-IC I received WOULD NOT fit the VRSF CP I had previously installed on my EVO 1. I tested both R-IC inlets and neither would fit. From my prior install experience, I used a little grease on the inlets and the CP still would not fit. On my Evo 1, there was no fitment issues at all.

At this point, I was discouraged and had to figure out what the issue was. My examination revealed that the R-IC inlets were too large for the CP. I was not in a position to reinstall the Evo 1, report the issue to VRSF, then repeat the entire process again at a later time. I decided that I would have to shave down the inlets until the CP fit.

After about 45mins of shaving, test fitting, and replacing my dremel attachments several times, I finally had the CP fitting both inlets. I proceeded to complete the install which required the use of a hydraulic jack and an extra set of hands to get the R-IC up and into the stock location. Fitment was tight. Without removing the front shroud, the R-IC would not fit in. I choose not to remove the bumper and ended up trimming my shroud to allow the R-IC to fit. After several choice words, the installation of the R-IC was complete. Total time, 4 hours…

I will update my post after I log a few pulls. What I can attest from viewing initial values on my JB4 BT setup, IAT temps drop very quickly when you’re performing pulls.

I bought a VRSF 5" HD IC for my m135i recently and I have been collecting some data. There isn't any info available on this IC, all the info seems to be for the larger race IC HD core.

Engine mods on the car are: stock EWG turbo, jb4, pure hi flow inlet, charge pipes, decat, Fuel-It TBI and stage 2 LPFP, E50 fuel and the recent additions of VRSF IC and straight through rear section.

Performance prior to IC was 100-200kph in 7.8s and a 1/4 time of 12.09s @ 119.7mph. IATS would top out at 140f on the 100-200 runs and the max i seen on the 1/4 was 160f. This is in 50-60f ambients.

Post IC fitting the 100-200kph performance is much the same, IATs however are much improved as can be seen in the pictures below. I'm going to my local 1/4 this weekend so will have new times then.

Post IC multigear pull:

100-200kph post IC:

The only negative I have to say about the IC is that there's some pressure drop across it. Some is to be expected but I believe VRSF states that the f-series HD cores do not suffer from any pressure loss. The effect of this is the turbos having to work harder at the same psi or struggling to hit the previous boost targets due to the turbo already running high duty cycle. Going to lower the boost slightly and see if that nets any quicker times.

Over all I'm happy with the results.

Here are some pics:

Almost seems like the tabs are supposed to match the factory ones but the location and dimensions are off.

Also does this fin density seem correct for the HD version?

Your 1/4 mile trap speed 119mph is m4 CP territory, which is impressive for a N55 stock turbo without meth. But 100-200 in 7.8s seems just unreal - that's even a full sec faster than m4 cp.

We've done extensive tests on a similarly built m2 on E30. The best times we got from 100-200 was 8.7 using short shifts in 3-4 and 4-5. It'd be 0.3s slower with auto shifting at redline.

There was also one m140 with dp and meth on race map doing low 8s. And we believe it was a definitely way faster car than yours.

We respectfully think real world times are only good power indication if you do side by side pull or at least use a reference car. There are too many variances in conditions that lead to wrong conclusion.

My highest trap speed has been 121mph so far however my car runs no where near as well at the 1/4 as it does on the road. I have to change my TBI settings via the meth FSB page for 1/4 racing and taper boost in more gently to avoid any HPFP issues. My main issues being the way TBI works and the fact I'm still jb4 only.

Off the top of my head I know of a manual 235i and manual m2 that ran low 8s 100-200kph on stock turbo so it isn't just me that's running good times on the stock turbo. These times have been verified or corrected for slope.

My friend owns a m140i with dp, meth, jb4 and runs flat 8s 100-200 and traps similar in the 1/4. Another owns a stock f80 m3 cp and my car pulls multiple lengths from a 60-140 roll.

To be honest it comes across as just because your m2 testing hasn't achieved similar results you are questioning mine, which is fair enough. However I've provided facts where as you have provided your opinion. You might think a m140 on meth, dp and jb4 is quicker but I have facts that prove it isn't. If you live in a country that doesn't have a favourable climit and restricts your cars performance that really isn't my problem. You can't start penalising people just because of the conditions they can run in.

@Daleb Thanks for the temp info on VRSF 5" HD. Couldn't find it anywhere. I was debating between the 5" HD and 6" Race. 5" HD looks like it's more than enough for a daily BM3 Stage 2.

We've redesigned and added quite a few different intercoolers since this original review so I figured I'd update the thread a bit. All VRSF intercoolers feature our proprietary HD fin pack including the new 5" Performance HD which offers the best cooling capability in it's class without breaking the bank. We recommend this FMIC for folks looking to stay under 600-650whp. As seen in the log below, the 5" stepped significantly out performs the OEM FMIC:

We've also added our new 6.5" Competition HD FMIC which is capable of supporting up to 850whp on a budget. This is the most cost effective option for those interested in maxing out their FBO setup or upgrading turbo in the future and it will outperform units 2-3x the cost. The VRSF 6.5" Competition HD FMIC features the best compromise between flow and cooling and will greatly outperform anything in it's price point.
