3 Litres of coolant in 5 months...

Hi,

I have a 2014 F22 M235i auto and have had a burning smell for the last couple of months, definitely not the brakes, don't think its gearbox related but further confirmed by the fact I have used around 3 litres of coolant in 5 months which seems excessive.

I know these engines burn coolant but the rate seems a little too high.

Thoughts?

Many thanks,
Harley

I might be wrong but I dont think it's normal at all for the n55 to consume coolant. My coolant level hasn't moved in about 3years. Also, you mention a burning smell. If it's a sweet smell from your exhaust then you are likely burning coolant and you should have it inspected right away. Hopefully it's just a leaky hose.

There's a thread somewhere about people losing coolant, and for at lease a couple of them it was a rock busting through their front radiator (or something along those lines) creating a minor leak.

Found it https://www.2addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=1434505

Same here my M235i has 40k and haven't even had to top it off in 3 years.

Oh dear, bad times.

Thanks for the responses

I don't think there is an external leak, I have placed cardboard underneath the other night and with the engine running for 10 minutes.

Nothing looks wet in the engine bay.
I've probably done 5k miles in 5 months with 3 litres of coolant used

Also (maybe related??) half of my climate control doesn't work... On max heat or any heat only the passenger side gets hot, all of the drivers side vents(legs, face, windscreen) stays icy cold. I have bled the system and topped it up this morning with no difference

I’d guess coolant leak - ten minutes really isn’t long enough to get things to operating temp particularly if your in cooler temps.
The lack of heat on passenger side is probably due to needing a properly performed bleed.

I bled the system as per the recommended procedure (top off with coolant then bleed valve open until no air comes out) close and recap the expansion tank then do the automatic bleed procedure (engine off, max temp low fan, pedal down for 10 sec and allow to self bleed for 12 mins)

Can you advise a better way?

Thanks

U did the right bleed procedure. Though with the .7 gallon coolant addition and the heat vent issue. Would pressure test to verify no leak down. Then do a complete drain and refill with a vaccum type purge and refill kit. Dealer would probably connect a scan tool first to assess the HVAC.

I’m not a tech so might be totally wrong. With your complaint of burning smell plus other issues, I think the test and vacuum fill are the way to go.

Run it on an incline and see if you get coolant condensing out of the tailpipe. My 2014 has never used any coolant.
