14 m235i overheat/ coolant explosion under hood

Driving home got a low coolant warning.
Checked temps and all was good (torque app).
Popped the hood and coolant explosion. I mean coolant everywhere. And does not hold any more I add.

What the hell is going on???

I looked around the reservoir and saw nothing, with the sheer spray and velocity maybe a coolant hose?

Might want to get that fixed. The engines need coolant.

I thought so too but then I was thinking what's cooler than ice? So I'm trying some pina colada in there. Alchohol offers additional cooling.

It's at a dealer now, unfortunately it's 2 hours from home and closed on a Sunday so no loaner. Then it rained

Gonna plead to get a loaner from my normal dealer or else I'm screwed on to driving 2 hours up Tuesday to try to get one.

I'm pretty optimistic it'll get sorted, the logistics are just a bit more stretched than I'd like hah.

Nah. That's what the coolant industry wants you to believe.

First off NEVER open the coolant overflow or any other part of the coolant system till the engine has cooled down, you could have burned yourself pretty badly.

Remember that when coolant is under pressure, the boiling point increases well past 100C, you open the lid when under pressure and all of a sudden you have pressurised coolant at 120C spraying everywhere.

Second it would probably be worth pressure testing the system when cold to see if you can identify the source of the leak.

If no leak is evident then carry out a sniff test on the coolant reservoir, this tests for combustion gases in the coolant, i.e. headgasket failed between coolant channels and combustion chambers.

Sniff test demo

It would also be worth checking the oil for any mayonnaise, i.e. headgasket failure between oil and coolant channels in the head.

So it was a coolant hose that slipped off a clip apperently. Good news for me.

Also got a Mini as a loaner so that's cool.

Still a bit fuzzy but I think a hose detached entirely

Glad it was an easy fix, generally if the overflow tank blow it's usually from head lift or a weak head gasket.

Ill ask a bunch more questions when I go pick it up but yeah I'm thrilled it wasn't anything major, I have some minor concerns that temperatures may have been high but I never read above 230F...

I'm going to take a guess from experience and say it was one of the coolant hoses coming off of the Coolant pump.
If the vehicle ran low on coolant - like nothing in the system...but the ignition was still left on, there is a good chance the Coolant pump is damaged as well.
That being said, with your car at the dealer im sure everything will get fixed properly
Interested in hearing what the cause was tho

Turned out a hose sipped out of a clip and layed across a belt that rubbed a hole in it- the pressure through the small hole is what propelled the coolant across the engine bay I guess ☺️
