If you're talking about a 228ix or 230ix, I wouldn't even bother man.. Just my $.02

Wait for Winter and have fun in the slippery snow conditions, where the powertrain can easily support the demand of the drivetrain.

Yes it is a 228ix. You might think it is "slow" but it has more than enough torque to break traction on asphalt. I once did a donut in a 320ix which only has 180 hp. If you think a car that can do 0-60 in five seconds, but the powertrain cannot support the demand of the drivetrain, you are wrong. Although I would pick the M235i over 228i any day, I simply do not need 320 hp to commute.

Never suggested that a 2.0T four banger is slow, in fact, I'm an advocate from the VW 2.0T world, built 4-5 2.0T cars.. All when I "could" have went with the VR6 or 3.0T offerings within the family. That aside, I don't doubt the car isn't capable to break traction when put in a position to do so, but the question was "is it bad for the x-drive car?". In your case my answer, categorically, is yes. The transfer case, clutches etc may be able to handle power, but what happens under high load, when you grab too much traction? That's the risk you're taking, and for what, really?

You may not see the negative impacts of such abuse for some time (depending on the frequency), so if it's a lease, send it

The main damage that donuts will do is that they will eliminate from people's minds any possibility that the donut maker is not an egregious jerk.

Has anyone here actually tried drifting an XDrive car on a track? Just curious what it is like.

With X-delete out for F series, you can just make your car RWD and drift all day. I took my X drive M235 out to the track and really never drifted at all or power slided at all, just understeer!

drifting

Wasn't the 2 series nicknamed "The Drifter" during its design phase? I thought the designers wanted the car to be good at drifting. This doesn't mean the car won't get damaged but from my experience at the track the 2 series loves to drift and it is super fun. I have no problem with premature wear. Will give me an excuse to buy a new new and next time I'll be smart and get the track package.

No, but it's bad for your tires...and reputation.

I've drifted my 330d xDrive Touring more than once, albeit by mistake. All I got was a '4-wheel drift', which isn't particularly exciting, although a bit worrying if there's a car alongside you (fortunately not, in my case).

Going 'round a Roundabout in the wet and cold I over-powered too early: the car drifts outwards towards the circumference of the roundabout, but neither over or under steering. Then on straightening up for the exit it gets under control again and just pushes forwards. It looks like I've positioned myself perfectly for the on-ramp I'm joining, but really a serious error on my part. On a 2-lane roundabout, I could have a car next to me and this would not turn out well.

(for those of you unfamiliar with these European constructions, here's a typical one. Generally, very efficient at maximising traffic flow in comparison to a 4-Way stop.

We're right there with ya! Here is suburban Detroit! Detail at :20. More than six others nearby! Lots of fun when traffic is light!

It's a hoot to see a 4-wheel drift described as a boring lack of fun, but to each his own. This behavior is something I truly adore about the AWD driving dynamic.

But here's my tips on how to drift in an X-drive:
1- drive to a nearby car dealership and arrange a test drive on a FWD vehicle.
2 - go to a nearby fast food establishment that still uses plastic trays, buy something, and take 2 (or more) trays out to the car. If you can find the old fiberglass-reinforced ones, they seem to work even better for some reason.
3- drive to a remote parking lot location (alternate - remove muffler, drive to street in front of in-laws or boss).
4- trays behind rear wheels, back onto them, set parking brake on.
5- drift like you are Walter Rorhle - keep an eye on tray wear, as it gets exciting when they wear thru (yes, you can roll a hatchback in a parking lot if you try hard enough).
