m235i for 60 mile daily commute?
Hey guys, in the market for a 2015 m235i RWD, and wondering if it is too bumpy for daily commute.
When covid/etc ends I may have to drive 60 miles round trip that will be 90% highways. I live in the Toronto area so roads aren't too bad with regard to potholes. The current car I am looking at has the M adaptive suspension. Will this be more rough than my current 2011 E90 328xi? I also have the opportunity to test an xDrive m235i, is the suspension/comfort different from the regular RWD m235i? Thanks! |

That sounds similar to what Im doing now. 60 miles round trip to work that is 90% highways. I live in LA where the roads are pretty shitty. luckily the worse parts of the freeway I took just had rework done recently and drive much better now.
I have driven an e90 328i non x drive but have not driven much of the xdrive so cant comment on the x portion. I don't think the ride will be too bumpy for daily commute, as a matter of fact, daily drive have become much more enjoyable to me minus the traffic. Although I have to admit Im biased to harsh ride. I can ride in sport setting of the suspension and think its not hard enough. To each his own. |

My info isn't exactly on-point to your question, but might be helpful. My car is a 2015 4 cylinder with MAdaptive suspension. When my wife first rode in it while on Sport setting, she complained that it was too "jiggly". When I switched to Comfort, she was satisfied. If you have MAdaptive as well, I suspect Comfort would be an adequate fallback for your highway commute.

In comfort / eco mode it will be more comfortable / better on fuel than your E90 so there's that.
I can't speak for comparing AWD to RWD but there's some differences in ride quality there too. For commuting on the highway I'd still pick a 6 cyl over a 4 cyl as the differences would be minor, unless it's stop and go traffic. If it's a year round commuter I'd still take RWD over AWD but that's just personal preference, it isn't for everybody. We keep our roads clear and heavily salted for the most part. There may be 1 or 2 days a year where it would be sketchy to drive and your problem will be clearance to bottom of car. |

I had an F22 M235 and now have an F23. I also have an F30 and F31, with a G20 en route. 60 miles a day, unless you plan to do weekend track days, 3-series is the way to go. I never, ever reach for my 2-series keys if I am going on a long drive. I'd actually look for a 4GC if I were you.

I had a 2011 e90 touring, my m240 is softer in comfort mode and the steering is much lighter. The 240i eats up the highway. Gas mileage is better in it too, but not great compared with a Corolla for example.

I do this easily (50+ miles a day), it's a great commuter car. I only wish it had more options like adaptive cruise control and assisted steering, even my rental Kia had those and it made road trips so much more pleasant.

i come from the world of hondas set up for auto cross and daily driving I always had them set up quite firm and never had the luxury of having a second car for long drives. To be honest even with the adaptive suspension set in sport plus mode I find it to be a bit to soft for my liking even for long drives. i find myself more conflicted about wanting the added mpg of eco mode but hate how soft it makes the car ride. I guess I just like the feel of the road in my butt even with being in my late 40s vrs my early 20s when i started autocrossing.

The M235 is a great commuter car. Mine is X-Drive, so I have summer and winter tires for it. Very reliable with good maintenance and I get ~26-27 MPG on a road balance you described. I am not light on the loud pedal once the car is up to temperature. The car is a joy to drive. I drive mostly in Comfort mode and only go to Sport if I am getting into the windy roads or am looking to drive more aggressively. My only caveat with the car is that the fuel tank is a bit small, requiring me to fill up 2-3 times a week (I do not let is drop to 1/4). Otherwise, it is an excellent commuter and very comfortable. Excellent choice. Good luck with your decision. The 2-Series is the best car BMW manufactures and will serve you well. The M235 is essentially bulletproof and if you take care of the maintenance and wait until it is warm to drive it hard, it should last you for a long time of you want to keep it.
