Does Key Need To Be Present To Open Hood (Auction Vehicle)

Hi and thanks for taking the time to read this. Any input is greatly appreciated!

So I might be a bidder on this "recovered theft" M240i right now and per the insurance listing, there is "no key." The auction company has provided 10 photos and no further information. I am wondering if any of you guys with the F22 chassis know if the key fob needs to be in the vicinity of the car to fully pop the hood or not.

Typically these auction listings have a photo of the engine bay and this does not, so I am already skeptical that it could be stripped for the drivetrain. Would like some input on this hood issue before bidding this thing up anymore.

Thank you kindly,
Jordan

Edit: Added photos, anyone think it has an engine in it? Find out on next week's episode of "Jordan loses his shirt on auction F22."

My car doesn't. I regularly put the hood up with no key fob anywhere near the car.

If you're not already familiar, the hood release is to the left of the driver's left calf when he or she is seated in the car. It takes two pulls of the release handle before the hood is ready to be lifted.

Thanks for this. That's all I needed to know.

Jordan,
Hood no, truck yes.

that is frustrating too, but any dealer can order and reset the key with new fobs. It is expensive though, just a warning.

Don't think so. The pull is fully mechanical I believe.

Someone has obviously had the hood open on it in the not too distant past, as it isn't latched down fully on the driver's side, only the passenger side latch is fully locked. Maybe it was when they stole the engine that the auction place doesn't want to talk about

I think the front suspension would ride higher than this with no engine

The front suspension looks fairly normally loaded. If an engine was missing I would think it would be sitting a bit higher. You could try pressing down on the fender and see how it bounces (if it bounces). 300 lbs missing should hopefully be obvious.

An engine being present doesn't mean there aren't other problems of course.

Unless they torched the springs to remove a coil, or replaced the engine with a box of concrete rubble

Yup, I saw that too! It just seems odd that it would be partly open on the drivers side like that. Almost like the hood was stuck and someone tried prying it open... I'm going to stick with your theory though, not worth the risk if its just a giant paperweight.

Thanks, yes I got quoted $800 for a new programmed key from fields BMW here in Central FL. They just need proof of ownership, of course.

Good observation, wasn't really thinking about suspension as I didn't think would make a noticeable difference. I'm in Orlando car is in San Jose or I would definitely figure this out in person, haha.

I'm just sitting here scratching my head trying to figure out why they would pull the engine and leave the rest of the car. I mean shoot, the headlights are $1k apiece.

I think it's odd that there are no keys for a vandalized car. I would have guessed that the insurer would have received those from the prior owner. Perhaps the vandalism includes a pound of sugar in the gas tank and the engine is toast???
The car also looks like it has front end damage from running into a curb. Maybe cosmetic, maybe more.

Personally I wouldn't risk things on a salvage title. Even if you get this car running it will cost more to insure and it will have permanently diminished value.

Yeah, I fully understand it's a huge risk. I mean, theres a reason it's totaled. Was just looking for a fun project car to keep me entertained for the summer, however, I've come to learn over the years, "project" and "headache" are sometimes synonymous.

I'm an idiot, I just realized something. I don't think they even have access to the interior to pop hood. I think someone tried to pry the hood open to check if engine has been stripped. This is my new theory anyway.

The reason I say this is because interior photos kind of look like they were taken from outside the car.

Not yet. You need a dealer's license to bid in California, so had to wire the broker a deposit. Should be cleared by tomorrow AM.

Probably take it up to $10k max considering how far it is from me and unknowns about car + auction fees put me at around $13k.

Will keep posted.

Didn't Jerry have to get rid of the car behind that odor? Brutal, just brutal.

If you're looking for positives:

-trunk is debaged
-aftermarket grills
-aftermarket front side markers

So I'd bed there are some mods under the hood/elsewhere.

Well, the left over fast food that's been baking in the car might have taken care of it.
