Calling all high mileage m235i owners
Good afternoon everyone. After a long internal struggle on what car to get next I've made up my mind on the 235i. Wonderful car, that gives good gas mileage, power and looks all in one package. As I shop around, i see a variety of mileage from these cars. Some are low, while some are pretty high. What I want to know is there anyone on these boards with their car are 80k + miles yet? I see plenty around the 50k mile mark and I can find cars at these mileage significantly cheaper than the ones with 20-30k miles on it. I know the n55 motor has basically had all the kinks worked out at this point and the zf transmission (only looking at automatic cars, wife needs to be able to drive it) seems to be pretty stout. I know these cars aren't that old but I do know there are some owners drive their cars to death and enjoy them. So if anyone has high miles on their car, I would like to hear your thoughts on the car. I would essentially be keeping this car for atleast 5+ years. I apologize if this happen been discussed, first post on these forum boards.

You might have better luck searching in the 3 series section I'm sure there are a LOT more high mileage 335s out there, and the shit you're worried about is common across the cars.

Shoot I've got the N20 but in my research of the N54/N54 the main issues I remember seeing people run into were water pump failures, timing belt, and walnut blasting. Not sure on the M235i though it's a newer car, hopefully there's some other 2addicts on here with higher mileage. But yah like BEM said, check out the 3er forum.

I knew I seen a group for you on here. I was trolling because I expect to keep my M240 until I die and just add to my collection. Please see below. https://www.2addicts.com/forums/show...t=high+mileage |

m235i-ZF8-RWD owner here with 129k+ KM daily driver with 45c 4 months summer temperatures and 90% humidity in Saudi Arabia Jeddah. (hard driver at the first couple years, normal driver to occasionally hard the last couple years)
the issues i remember i ran to are: + wiper fluid motor failed. + battery replaced once. + front fender Paint job from small bumps. below are annoying issues (with no damage) so far by the following but might be immanent to a problem coming: + weird squeek sound on the right front dash (almost sounds from the corner or door) only on slow speeds and uneven road, got it fixed 1st time by the dealer and went away by replacing few parts, 8months later same exact sound comes back slowly, got it fixed by dealer again with more parts replaced, issue fixed. 9 months later up to today (sound is coming back but at much slower pace; once or twice a day, sometimes once or twice a week) no more warranty to cover this, so i will figure it out later or just live with it. + supercharge whining sound when accelerating 1st, 2nd and sometimes 3rd gear, With AC OFF or ON, not sure if it is coming from alternator, gearbox, turbo or engine, but definitely not a normal noise, but can live with it if it keeps running. + Hard shifting and clunk at Sports+ mode if not revving hard, shifts perfectly on down shifts and higher revs. + 1st, 2nd gear at slow speeds, exiting garage, parking lots etc, is hesitant and is all over. shifting issues maybe resolved if i plan to do transmission maintenance.

The timing chain problem was in the 4-cylinder and was mostly resolved by 2015, so it does not apply to the 235 or 240.
There have been problems reported with plastic parts, but mostly in cars that have been tuned. It is NEVER a good idea to buy a tuned car, simply because it is much more likely to have been stressed. This is especially true with high mileage specimens. |

I owned a 2014 M235i - first year production, here are some issues I've had.
Head unit quit at around year 3 of the ownership - replaced under warranty. Charge pipe exploded at around 50K miles and nearly 6 years of the ownership - limped it to a dealer with 2-3 days left on the extended warranty. While the charge pipe was addressed, the service department ran the last before the warranty expires checks - oil filter housing oil leak fixed under warranty, valve cover oil leak fixed under warranty (granted to say, these leaks appeared to be just developing as I didn't see any oil residue on the garage floor, etc.). The front suspension struts were found leaking - not covered by the warranty.

96k miles '14 m235i 8AT RWD, engine never tuned.
In my five years of ownership, there have been no major issues and certainly none that have left me stranded. In fact, aside from the charge pipe letting go last month, my car really hasn't had any issues for the last 45k miles. I change oil on average every 6k miles, removed the electronic dampers, and serviced the transmission as recommended by ZF. I should also note that I have tracked this car twice with no issues. Compared to my last car, which was a new GTI, this car has been cake. Issues: 1) Charge pipe just let go at 94k mies COMMON 2) Valve cover leak <50k (warranty replaced) COMMON 3) Oil filter housing crack <50k (warranty replaced) COMMON 4) Emissions evap sensor failed <50k (warranty replaced) 5) Tie Rod adjustments seized, replaced |

This is a sort of corollary to your question - it's a table I made up from reading 'round threads about long-term ownership and what maintenance you should do that's not on the standard BMW service schedule:
https://www.2addicts.com/forums/show...php?p=27767885 So basically, the higher the mileage the more things you'd want the previous owner to have done on top of the standard BMW service schedule. For some of these, if the owner hasn't done them and the car has survived, then they'd be things you'd want to schedule asap after you take ownership yourself. For others - like more regular oil changes - you may give preference to cars offered with evidence of such. The big items worth spending money on seem to be a more robust replacement charge pipe @35-40K miles, and getting a certified specialist ZF outfit to replace the auto oil @50-60K miles (almost no BMW dealers have the equipment, and tend to say the oil is 'lifetime'). See the table for more detail.

I recently purchased a 2014 M235 with 108k miles. I would love to have my automatic transmission services but apparently there isn't a "ZF certified specialist" anywhere near me (Chattanooga, TN).

Unfortunately, you need to take it to the dealer. When I had my 15 F23, they had to the the ZF OEM to diagnose an issue.
