These drivetrains are still pretty new, so maybe this will be helpful for someone once I know the resolution.

I was having my Covid vaccine done today at a drive-through. All-in-all, about 40 minutes of primarily idling.

After the injection, you're required to wait 15 minutes for them to make sure you won't react poorly. About 10 minutes into the wait, I hear a squealing sound but assumed it was a nearby truck. It could have possibly been a loud whistle but it sounded like a belt squealing.

3 minutes later, I look up and notice in my side view mirror that I can't see the car behind me. There's a thick cloud of white smoke coming out of my M240i's tailpipe. At this time, the car hadn't alerted me of any issues. I drove out of the line and into the nearest possible lot and parked it with the hood open so it could cool. Went to grab lunch at a fast food restaurant while waiting for a tow, came back, and the car was STILL overheated 30+ minutes after turning the engine off. Would be really nice to have a temp gauge in these cars.

Coolant was completely gone from the reservoir. The car's at BMW now and I have a brand new 430i M Sport loaner. They expect to have an answer as to what the problem is in a day or two. Car has 52,XXX miles at the time of breakdown. It's under CPO warranty for the next 14 months still.

That sucks.

Did you have a low coolant warning on the dash prior to overheating? One common issue I've seen online is that the earlier M240i's didn't come with the rock guard from the factory. So it's prone to getting punctured/damaged from debris on the road if you're going fast and/or vehicles in front kick something up = coolant leak.

https://www.2addicts.com/forums/show...2F2500%20miles.

The next most common issue would be the radiator fan, followed by the water pump.

Umm I hate to be the pessimist, but plume of white smoke out the tailpipe followed by overheating tells me head gasket blew (most likely) and you were burning coolant. Would explain why the reservoir was completely empty as well.

I may be wrong, but I believe the A2W intercooler in the intake is on a separate coolant loop than the radiator loop (why would you want to super heat your intake air using engine coolant?) so I don't believe it was that.

White smoke can also be blown coolant seals in the turbo.

How did you know it was over heated if there is no coolant temp gage? Don't base it on the warning you had on the screen as I get that every time I open the hood after running the engine. That alone does not mean an over heat. Hope it is just the turbo as that is the least damage to the car. Remember the guy from England that sort of had the same issue with the smoke and loss of coolant.

Interesting, I didn't know that! But reading it again that makes sense. I assumed it was telling me the engine overheated but reading it now it makes sense that it's just warning me not to touch hot things.

First off, sorry to hear about your car.

Here is a link to the Euro car with similar smoke and his outcome.

https://www.2addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=1806592

Good luck! And keep us posted. Relieved to see its CPO, and makes me super happy I still have over a year on my CPO warranty...

josh

PS What year is your car?

Thanks all!!

BMW called me yesterday. They said they replaced an "actuator", took it for a test drive, and now the car is shaking. They aren't sure what's wrong and won't have a master tech to examine the car til Monday or Tuesday.

So far they've replaced the throttle body actuator and the valve cover / PCV. Car is still broken!

We'll see what the fix is next week, most likely.

For whatever reason, it is extremely common for the PCV to fail when cars are idling for an extended period of time. This causes smoke out of the exhaust because it's just recirculating oil into the combustion chamber. It's not likely at all that your car overheated but everything will need to be cleaned (i.e. spark plugs, maybe injectors, etc.) to get it back running smoothly.

Low coolant levels are a different concern and should be investigated separately. I made a few videos about it on my youtube channel @kern417. Here's an example of what, that I'm guessing you got since you didn't get a low coolant message.

How long a time is that; is that a single time or a cumulative time?

Yep, this is exactly what needed to happen.

Someone else pointed out that the message that I thought said the car was overheating was literally just a "be careful, it's hot" message when I opened the hood. The coolant re-appeared once it got to the dealership, so… not sure what that was about.

Like 30min to 1hr+. It sounds funny, but the first time I heard of this was a guy waiting in the car for his girlfriend. So that may give you a ballpark

A lot of people have idled for a while (myself included) without issue, but it seems like this smoke form the exhaust concern typically starts with "I was parked with the engine running for a while." People are either replacing the whole valve cover or just the pcv diaphragm.

Zero drivetrain modifications whatsoever.

I guess when the RPM isn't changing and the car's just idling, the crankcase pressure gets too high on these engines.

Sorry to upset you, but topping up the coolant in the container probably won't help. I had a similar problem once; it was last summer. I saw smoke, too, and knew something had gone wrong. But it cooled off in twenty minutes. Thanks to truetowing.com, I quickly got the car home, where I was able to inspect it in more detail, and invited my neighbor friend, who knows better about cars. After a quick inspection, he said I had a burst head gasket. I was so disappointed, but luckily he helped me find a solution to the problem. Actually, this car is driving me crazy with endless problems, so I'm thinking about buying a new one.

DO NOT IDLE YOUR B58! I had to idle my 2017 M240i last month for about 40 minutes and the result is complete turbo and engine failure. After the towing debacle, of not being able to put the car in neutral and having to slide it on the tow truck, the dealer quoted a cost of $31,000 for the repair (car has 51,000 miles, warranty is 50,000). I will be making a separate thread to warn and hopefully assist any other unknowing victims. It is unacceptable that a modern car can not be idled without being destroyed. Attached is a photo of my pristine M240i on the tow truck. It will soon be for sale with a brand new motor and turbo along with my 2018 X3 M40i with a B58 (my sixth and last BMW, too bad because I was a major enthusiast).
