What would LSD actually mean on the 2-series?
Hi all,
With the new specs and photos that have come out the last couple days, there's been a lot of talk about the (seeming) lack of LSD standard. I believe some have speculated it could be an option. I'm not a car guy, really. I follow car news on a daily basis, particularly the 2 series because I'm interested in getting one, but I really don't know much about under the hood. I read most of the wiki on LSD, but that left me with more questions that answers. Would someone mind breaking down for me what kind of real benefit I could see with LSD? Better handling, better mpg? I'm inclined to trust the folks in this forum when they say it's good to have, but I kind of need to know more to feel comfortable paying extra if it's an option. Thanks.. |

If you don't know what it does, you don't need one.
It improves traction when putting heavy power in-curve, with bumps. With no LSD, all the power goes to the "lifted" wheel, and no power goes to the on-the-ground wheel, resulting in the lifted wheel spinning more and giving you none of the desired effects of power oversteer you were looking for. With the LSD, some of the power goes to the on-ground wheel, and less goes to the lifted wheel, so you have a more controlled delivery of power and you can still throttle steer the car even when it is unsettled on bumps. |

It's not only helping traction when one wheel is lifted or unsettled over a bump, it helps traction during any aggressive cornering where the outside tire has more weight transfer and more traction.
Having said that, you really do not need it unless you autocross and / or track your car regularly and are advanced enough to even notice the difference. For street driving, the standard e-diff is more than sufficient |

I'm also somewhat new to the LSD discussion, but I'm curious if someone can explain the difference between an electric diff vs. a LSD on a BMW. A quick search on the internet reveals some interesting information on electric diffs on trucks and 4x4's, but what about on a BMW? Is this simply the traction control braking that occurs under hard cornering when sliding? If so, this sucks. I always disable the nanny's on a track because I find it intrusive. Can someone let me know if I'm confusing an electric diff with traction control or if these systems work together in some way?

Electric diff uses traction control sensors and brakes to operate, but it is not the usual DTC system (that we all hate when having some fun). It limits its action to activating the brake on the "lifted" (I do not really mean off the ground by that, just the wheel that has no weight on it) wheel when it starts spinning much faster than the other wheel, in effect redirecting some of the force to the right wheel. It does not cut power or correct for off-axis movement of the car.
I'm not sure if it remains active when turning all the nannies off. |

It means I won't have to get one from Quaife

Here's what it means if you are like me an like to modify cars:
In my 2010 n54 335i, I added a tune, downpipes, intake, and a water/meth injection system and made 412/446 RWHP/TQ. I also had coils and larger wheels/tires running 275/30/19s in the rear. With the added power, I couldn't get traction off-the-line and needed to feather the throttle starting in 2nd gear (with the 6 speed auto trans) to get a decent launch. Still, my 0-60 times as measured on my V-Box were between 4.2 and 4.5 seconds. Not bad but not good considering the power I was making. So I picked up a Wavetrack LSD and it just transformed the car. I could do 0-60 in under 4 seconds ever time, even when it was damp/wet outside. My best time was 3.5 seconds and mostly was in the 3.7 to 3.8 second range doing nothing more than just flooring it from a dead stop in 2nd gear. No brake boosting and I didn't even need to warm up the tires. Also, as other posters mentioned the performance on the track was much improved, particularly coming out of corners. The LSD is a must have and I'm only considering ordering the M 235i with the M-Sport package (supposedly comes with the LSD according to Jason's 7-22-13 post).

In regard to the M sport package, will we even have that option on the M235? I ask because the M sport "stuff" seemed to came standard on the 135s that I have had...I would think that would be the case with the M235 as well, but I could be wrong. As far as the LSD goes, it sounds like it will be a BMW performance part, not standard, at least that's the last that I heard.

M sport package will be standard on the M235... You might be able to get the LSD with the M performance kit or even maybe individually as an M Performance part later in March it's been said |

Anyway this (M Performance Kit) will probably be a very expensive option unfortunately.

Thanks all. I'm gathering LSD is important to the performance/track folks, but not relevant to those outside those circles. For better or worse, I think I'm on the outside. I care about performance and driving experience (I'm looking at the successor to the 1 series, after all), but I don't know enough to start modding. Maybe one day...
