New Guy New Car

Hello everyone. Wisconsin cheesehead here. Have had this beauty for a month now. 2018 M240I. Absolutely love this car. Was never really in to cars. I am a track bike guy. I have added a Dinan Stage one ECU to the car. I am looking at the Agency CAI. I know the Dinan keeps the car under warranty but would the warranty drop with this CAI on it? Great forum with excellent information.

To reword your question to the correct terms: Can BMW deny a warranty claim based on a user modification? Yes. The question then becomes what kind of malfunction or damage could an intake cause, because they would need prove the causality between your mod and the malfunction? A couple of scenarios I could think of. First, something is damaged on install. Second, you get a CEL after install indicating some parameter is thrown out of whack related to engine control due to the CAI install. Can BMW then flag your car as modded and make all your engine related warranty claims painful? Yes. How likely is? I suppose it depends on your servicing dealership and how mod friendly they are.

Personally, I’m waiting for the Dinan CAI which should be released in July/August.

Hope this helps. BTW, car looks great, congrats!

Well done on the car! Looks fantastic!

As for your warranty question I can't imagine you would have an issue with an intake, but you never know. Any big warranty claim BMW NA gets involved. Also I don't think it will get you much in terms of power but the sound will certainly be different with the open filter.

All good. I had a 2008 Mustang Gt with a 2.8 Kenne Bell supercharger. All Eibach suspension. Full Magnaflow exhaust. I got out of that about 6 years ago and got into track riding motocycles. Ran a KTM RC8R. I am now hitting 50 years old and made this my last year of that. My son has a BMW I borrowed and that was all it took. It doesnt have the pull of the GT being I was at 580 hp but I love this car.

I know I've brought this up before but just be aware that even with Dinan your factory warranty might be voided, just like with any aftermarket part. But Dinan supplies their own warranty on their part and "affected OEM parts" so the overlap is generally enough.

A CAI generally won't be an issue. But if e.g. water makes it's way into the intake and hydrolocks your engine...BMW could potentially blame the CAI and deny coverage. Granted this is a highly unlikely scenario but that is the implication of putting aftermarket parts on factory warrantied cars.

Hydrolock from water entering the air intake system would never be covered under warranty, it would always have to be an insurance claim.
