New Car Day - This Saturday!

So the big day is almost here! I'll take delivery of my new M240 on Saturday. This isn't my first rodeo but it's my first BMW. Any tips on what to look for to see that the prep was done properly and thoroughly?

IMHO dealerships are not equipped to properly prep a new car as far as paint is concerned. If you are particular about those things, bring a paint light with you and watch for swirls and scratches. My next new car I'm going to ask them to leave the shipping wrap on and take care of it myself.
Other than that is just to not get too carried away with excitement and look out for dings, transport damage etc. Easier to get it taken care of (or at least noted) during delivery than after.
Congrats!

I didn't have them leave on the shipping wrap but I did tell them not to wash it at all per my detailer and brought it to his shop for wash and ceramic coat as well as a tinter he partners with. Still in the shop... Really want my car lol.

check the beltline of the car - the bumper height all the way around the car - check for scrapes and check for door dings. Check door edges for chips.

check the windshield for stone chips.

check the interior headliner, seats (rear) for rips or tears and where the fabric inserts on the edges to make sure the ends are all clipped in. Check the leather steering wheel and shift knob leather.

check the wheel (rim area) for chips or scrapes.

check the paint finish in the garage and in the sun for chips or touch-up paint.

Open the trunk and the hood and inspect paint edges, and the overall area for any issues.

make sure both keys work.

I did all those things quickly and being very friendly to the all the dealership people. My car is a daily-driver and at four years it looks pretty much like the day I picked it up at the dealer. I had my dealership wash and prep the car and requested no front license plate mount.

I did a walk-around ours when it arrived (not an OCD guy w/ paint finish looking for factory flaws - just any potential delivery damage). Opened both doors and checked sill plates for scuffs and proper door fitment.

Sales guy spent over an hour with us, open the hood, trunk, and demonstrating all the electronic features (seats, bolster, lumbar) radio, pretty much everything, including showing us all the Navigation features and pairing our phones and setting up each key fob.

Our dealership (BMW Ft. Myers FL) is a great business and made sure we were completely happy w/ everything before we drove off. Got two followup calls weeks afterward asking if all was well and if we had any questions.

Same experience with my dealer in Delaware. 2nd Bimmer and I will never go anywhere else.

So we're heading out the door to the bank and credit union for the checks and pick up the car at 1PM and the dealer (approx 90 minutes away) calls to tell me the car wasn't delivered yesterday. Things started out so easy three months ago for what was supposed to be a 6 - 8 week process. Absolutely nothing has gone according to plans since then. I don't have words to describe the frustration I'm feeling right now.

Sorry to hear! Do they at least have an ETA for you? Tell them to make it right with free accessories

I know the feeling. Mine was stuck on a broken down transport ship in Southampton for 10 days.

That's mucho annoying. Are you on the new BMW garage website? Your car's status should be there or give the Genius a call.

They should have given you a better update than that. I was told 6-8 weeks when I ordered but it took a little longer. And even when the car was at the dealer they were too busy for me to take delivery so I had to wait almost a week to actually get the car.

But hopefully you'll have good news soon, they should know where the car is at least.

It's the end of the day and still no news though the dealer was expecting it "any time" and he was to keep me updated. I suggested some BMW swag or accessories might make me a bit more accepting of this last-minute delay. I also said it might just be me but something doesn't smell right. I want this car but if it's not to be, then refund my $2,000 deposit and let me shop elsewhere.

My Garage / My BMW is useless since the vehicle is on US soil. The last information was
• Production began 05/08/2018
• Entered assembly 05/29/2018
• Underwent final quality check 5/30/2018
• Departed the factory for the port to be shipped to the United States on 05/31/2018
• Departed Germany for the U.S. on the vessel Figaro on 06/09/2018
• Arrived at Port Baltimore, MD on 06/26/2018 (Ship actually docked mid-day on 6/25!)
• Transported to final Vehicle Processing Center to prepare for shipping to your BMW center on 06/27/2018

I think you're like me in not believing it until it is done. Don't worry about it. I see you're in MI, for me to get my car in WI it took about a week for shipping from the port to my dealer. I'd say you have 1 - 2 weeks for delivery (shipping and then dealer prep).

That sucks but your frustration will disappear once you push the start button.

Well, I'm this case not. I ended up walking away from the deal after wasting 3 months with the special order process. I am definitely NOT buying a BMW now - or ever. If anyone wants to buy this car, the dealer is hot to sell it now.

Certainly understand your frustration, but to use a football analogy, you just slogged your way down the field 3-4 yards at a time and now you're on the 1 foot line and you bailed on the deal. Once you've waited that long, why not wait an extra day or two. Sorry, but I don't get it. I ordered my MINI Cooper and had to wait an extra few weeks, driving a car that was dying. I was frustrated, but that frustration all melted away once I had the keys. If all the bridges with the dealership aren't burned, maybe you can still work something out at a price agreeable to both of you. It is after all a car you selected in detail. Here's hoping you can work it out. The M240 is worth it.

Sorry to hear that. I do understand. As I mentioned, the local VW/Audi/Porsche dealer here has earned my everlasting wrath. I'm not sure I'd ditch the brand, but if they're the only dealer nearby it might make sense.

I know of no car I'd rather have.

The vehicle actually arrived. It was ordered incorrectly. For me to accept it was ludicrous. There is far more to it and I'm not going to air the dirty laundry in public. I'm simply done with it, cancelled my loan and insurance, and will decide what to do once my blood pressure comes back down to normal.

Completely understand the frustration, and perhaps waiting to drop many millimeters of mercury is a better time to make a decision. As you figure out the cause of the problem and what action you want to take, suggest keeping in mind:
  • The truckers from the port are independent contractors
  • BMW will build what the dealer orders on the assumption the order is correct.
  • The salespeople don't know a car arrives until the hauler actually pulls in the driveway. True for all brands/dealers.

If knowing this, you still wish to dismiss ever owning a BMW brand car, that is your choice of course, but it sounds like the primary problem was with that particular dealer, at the salesperson level. Of course, being in Oakland County as well, I'm not certain if we used the same dealer, but if not, I've had very good treatment and vehicle care overall in Farmington Hills. Whatever you decide, best of luck/wishes to you.

Well, that's a completely different situation if the car wasn't as you ordered. Hope it all works out for the best. I'd be upset and frustrated too if I were in a similar situation.
