My 2016 228i still has the originally battery and so far no problems, however, last time I was in for service, they mentioned they did a test on it, and it "failed". This was 10 months ago.

Would you normally get a warning light of some kind when the battery needs to be changed, or is it normally small things, like slow cranks, exc?

Dealer quote to replace was around $500...

Our 2017 Subaru cranked slow then needed a jump. Auto Zone did a free battery test and said it was ok. Dealer said it was bad and replaced it. Cranks must better now so testing varies.

Failure to crank is my test. Hoping my 2017 230 goes a few more years. Wondering if Texas heat is detrimental.

I believe these batteries start to go when little things start screwing up. Last winter I was driving along, then all of a sudden the doors unlock, the windows drop down (as if I was opening the door), the doors lock again and then the windows go back up. All while cruising down the street. Did this a few times then stopped. Didn't change the battery yet ('16 M235i) but I will if it starts to do this again.

Just replaced mine after a few low voltage warnings. Went with an Interstate MTX-49/H8.

My 2014 still has the original battery. When I bought it two years ago, I got several "battery discharge" warnings. After some investigation, I found the negative terminal to be very loose. I have not had a warning since and plan to see how long the battery will go. btw, it's at 65,000 miles.
I will replace it at the first indication of problems though.

I'm guessing being in moderate climate St. Louis has helped. My 2 spent its' first five years in Michigan, and that was the life of the battery.

I replaced my 2016's original battery (65,000 mi) preemptively this November. Figured 5 winters was enough.

I've been debating changing my 2016 228i battery preemptively also. It is still the original and being in Minnesota it occasionally sees extreme cold temps. But I've decided to try for one more season out of it, since it really doesn't see much use during the winter anyway.

2014 228i, ended up replacing the original battery at 55kmi 9/2020 after experiencing long crank times. I was able to get my local dealer to price match an out-of-state dealer's lowest price ($239). Installation took all of 5 minutes & registered via the BimmerLink app.

Edit: Battery was purchased at the parts counter and changed/registered by myself.

My 2015 is still on the original battery. Tested it last winter with bimmercode it claimed the battery at any given time or temp to run anywhere from 63% to 98% battery life. i posted this question and found almost everyone stated to replace the battery. I am not one to just replace something for the sake of replacing I live in Central PA and the car sees winter conditions so far I have never had a slow crank or any symptom of the battery going bad. If it dose fail to start i always carry a high quality set of jumper cables in the trunk they have bailed many a driver out with a dead battery.

My 2016 M235 is closing in on 6 years and 55k miles on the original battery. It's showing no issues. The key to a long battery life with these cars is fairly rountine trickling charging, especially in the winter. All the computers, seat heaters, steering wheel heaters, and various other electronics put a serious draw on the battery.

The electronics definitely do have a constant draw. I have never charged mine other than driving.

I used the BimmerLink app.. they are the same developers of the BimmerCode app if you're familiar.
