Typical M240i Oil Change Cost at Dealership?

I typically change my own oil, but at a BMW dealership in Phoenix, the dealer only charged me $125+tax for a complete service...including a review video. Since the OEM oil/filter/gasket cost me $80, I let them do it. However, down here in Tucson...they consider my M240i to be an "M-car" and are asking $280+tax. I'll do it myself for that much...even with the no-dipstick hassle. Is that too much?

I think 280 is high

don’t believe I’m paying anything near that for my 235

I paid for the first oil change @ 2K as a break-in oil change and they charged me $168. A lot of dealers have been offering a pre paid, three oil changes for $199.

Yes, it's too much.

My dealer in Cincinnati charges $165+tax, although from time to time I've received email notices for $99+tax specials. I'm now past the "free oil change" time period and will just have my independent do it. Generally, the only reason I see to go to the dealer is because it's necessary (read there's no alternative), or because it's convenient.

The details of the 3 oil changes for $199 offer can be seen here: https://bmwusaservice.com/ultimatecare.

"The BMW Ultimate Care Oil Services plan includes unlimited oil and oil filter changes for three years for $199.00 plus taxes and disposal fees where applicable. Unlimited oil services included are based upon the associated BMW vehicle Condition Based Service (CBS) system. Non-CBS vehicles: annual low-mileage oil changes are included as outlined in your BMW Maintenance Booklet Available for all BMW vehicles that have reached 60 months or 60,000 miles and have no current Ultimate Care+ coverage. Plan is available for purchase once BMW vehicle has reached 54 months and has current BMW Ultimate Care Scheduled or BMW Ultimate Care+2 coverage. All work is carried out by BMW Trained Technicians using Original BMW Parts, which come with a two-year unlimited mileage limited warranty. Warranty repairs do not constitute an extension of the original limited warranty period for the vehicle or a part thereof."

I have to say, I'm getting too old to want to bother figuring out exactly what all that means. Oil changes just don't cost that much.

Buy a set of ramps and do it yourself. You'll need a 6 point 17mm socket for the drain plug. The filter is bit tricky to get out. Buy a 6 point shallow 32mm socket, a swivel and a short extension. My 32mm socket uses a 3/8" drive. Buy you oil locally so you can return it the store. By federal law, a store that sells motor oil has to accept the old oil for free.
