Car Movers

Great forum. Got my 2 Series late last year, and very little miles on it. There’s a good possibility I need to move and was hoping someone had a recommendation for shipping my car halfway across the country? I’ve read old posts on other forums and it seems like you can go through a broker (which I can’t recall if that was recommended) or an individual car mover. Also what kind of advance notice will I need? I would like to have it moved inside a truck, but I don’t know if that’s feasible these days or not. Any info is appreciated. Thanks

we just shipped a subaru across country for my son at college. we leased it new from the dealer and they helped us coordinate with the shipper (MBA Logistics out of bowling green, KY). it all went much easier than i was expecting. the only thing i had to do was tell them a date range and zip code for receiving the car. the shipper sent all paperwork to me, and once i signed then i just communicated directly with the shipper. because we were traveling ahead of the car, the dealer agreed to hold the car on their lot for me and ensure it was loaded with the shipper.

$1400 from central maryland to socal.

assuming you bought from a local BMW dealer, maybe contact them for recommendations?

We drive our BMW X3 to Naples Florida every winter. We have decided to have it shipped by truck next year. It is a 1300 mile trip and after 13 years we are tired of driving down and putting up with crazy drivers. We can have it picked up at our home and delivered to Punta Gorda, Fla. Cost around $800. When we price 2 nights in a hotel, meals, mileage, wear and tear on the X3, shipping clubs and tolls it comes pretty close to the cost of shipping it. We live an hour and a half from the airport and can get flights for around $100. each. It only takes 2 hours to get to Ft.Myers where friends will pick us up. It takes 23 hours to drive there. They live 30 minutes from the airport and our SUV will be dropped off at their house where we will stay for a few days. Same deal on the return trip.

I'm using these guys to ship my wagon back from LA. Been happy with the communication so far, they're picking the car up Monday can report back once delivered to me. If you can be flexible on pickup date and don't mind waiting a few weeks to receive your car the cost is not excessive for enclosed transport.

This is so they can consolidate a full load, thereby keeping costs competitive?

Do you know the cost per mile that you're paying for an enclosed transfer?

About $0.60 per mile.

My car is at Matt Farah's new storage facility in Los Angeles and S1G is bringing it to my BMW dealer up in Doylestown, PA. Getting an oil change and a quick once-over before I bring it home again. I don't need it urgently and it's in good hands, having a spa day in fact.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations. It looks like I better start calling if it can take a few extra weeks. If anyone has any other movers to consider, I’d appreciate those too.

Car transport

I've used PlyCar for several years to move our Tesla from PHL to Tucson & back. They are not brokers, only use employed drivers, fully enclosed transport. Never an issue. More expensive than most but always on time and car arrived unscathed. Even encouraged us to pack the car trunks with our stuff which made the rest of our travels easier.

JP Logistics is also supposed to be quite good. Not cheap, but good.

If money is a consideration, then the brokers are much less costly. I have used Montway a couple of times recently, once to ship from New York to Indiana, once from San Francisco to New York. No complaints or problems of any sort either time. For the trip from SF, they allowed my daughter to completely fill her car with household belongings, saving her quite a bit that she would have otherwise had to spend on shipping. Highly recommended for those moving kids to and from college.
The brokers have a faster turnaround time, because they use contract drivers and can fill the transporters more quickly. I don' think that they offer enclosed service, but to my mind that is not really called for unless you are transporting your Ferrari 250 GTO.

When I was new at having vehicles transported, I used a broker and the driver was an independent with an open trailer. The car happened to be the first one forward on the top rack. Covered in dirt from whatever he drove through while raining, took a couple of hours to clean, only to find some hood paint chips that were not there before. It's no Ferrari, but that is not acceptable to me. Never again open nor independent haulers with arduous claim processes.

The rates I quoted above were for enclosed transport, think it would have been $500 or so less from LA to PHL for open transport. While my F31 is far from a Ferrari, it's also the last car I bought my father so the extra $ was worth it.

I was actually surprised how inexpensively I could ship enclosed and not use a broker, the extra week or two wait doesn't matter one bit to me but could be an issue for some. Basically coast to coast for under $2K is a steal in my book.

I used Intercity Lines three years ago to have my car shipped from the east coast (CT) to the Bay Area, CA. They are not a broker. Enclosed transport. Same driver/truck the whole route. It can take several weeks to set up and I actually wound up leaving before my car as they were not ready to pick up yet. (they try to consolidate enough cars for the cross country trips). So i left my car with my brother and they took it from there.Aanother option would have been for me to leave my car at their facility in Massachusetts, but that was convenient or feasible given my schedule.

Very professional and detailed. It cost a little more than $2K.
