2022 coupe
Heard from my dealer today that the '22 2 series coupe will go into production November'21. I'll have to extend my current lease ('19 2 series coupe), which expires in September.

BMW have installed G42 specific equipment in the plant in Mexico, it seems: https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1745856. Many of the G20 3-series are already built there.
Some experience of US customers with G20s built in Mexico: https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1728302 The G87 M2 is also expected to be produced in the factory in Mexico: https://www.bmwblog.com/2021/02/25/2...est-prototype/ |

My dealer told me August begins production on the coupe. Is it November now? That is really going to suck. Does anyone know if the 2022 coupe will definitely retain the manual transmission option? I have read conflicting things on that as well

The G87 M2 is pretty well confirmed as having a manual, as do the lower powered M3 and M4s. The lower powered G42s in Europe (220/225) models may also have manuals, but it looks less likely the M240i will have one due to no availability in the M340i and and M440i and as is the case now, not with AWD. At the moment the current 3 and 4 series only have manual transmissions available in the 318d, non in the petrol/gas engined cars. I'd say no manual in the 230i either, as it hasn't been offered in the 330i or 440i in North America.

Reader: "Just before Christmas, I was in a fender bender that totaled my Saab. So off I went to the BMW dealership, where I was informed that BMW no longer offers sticks." C&D: "Incorrect. You can still get a manual in the 2-series coupe, M2, M3, and M4." Who's right? Beats me, although C&D does have a reputation for accuracy to protect.

August 2021 has been the G42 start of production date ever since there's been confirmation of a G42.
If a dealer is saying November 2021, there are two possibilities: (1) production has been pushed back due to the chip constraints or similar bottlenecks; or (2) the dealer is talking through his @$$. If I had to put money on one or the other, I'd probably go with (2)... because, well, it's what dealers do. |

In March, I visited my dealer, who told me that they could get me an allocation for a 2021 M240. I figured that I would trade in my '17, and get one last, "analog" BMW, with regular-looking gauges, and such.
During the dealer visit, they informed me that they could not get an allocation for a 2021 2-Series. They showed me some "options," such as a used M3. I decided to wait until the 2022 model came out. Given that the plant in Mexico has been building 3-Series cars for awhile, and the new 2-Series it to be built on that platform, I was less wary. The Sales Manager of the dealership did drop into my conversation with my Sales Advisor. He mentioned that a manual transmission would be available. Moreover, my favorite color, Misano Blue (only currently available on the M2CS), would be available as well. I'm going to enjoy my current M240 for now. It's been paid off for awhile. When they start taking orders for the 2022 model, we will see. |

True, the final assembly will take place in Mexico, while previously, final assembly took place in Germany. If you're worried about quality, I think you're overreacting. Either way, final assembly is using parts sourced from all over the globe. I'm not terribly concerned about where final assembly happened other than: 1) no more European delivery, and, 2) hopefully shorter shipping times to US dealers. The 6 weeks I had to wait after final assembly to take delivery. It would be nice to cut that down by a couple of weeks!

There already exists a strong railroad connection to get vehicles assembled in Mexico to the US, due to the number of assembly plants there. So, I figure that delivery times should shrink some, and that this would be helpful to PCD.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm kinda liking what I'm seeing in the newest spy shots I linked to above. The grill looks good. The Hofmeister kink appears to be intact. The wheels look good. It also appears that the M performance model is getting sportier side mirrors than the outgoing model. The dual exhaust looks good on that one as well.
In short, this is taking on the appearance of "we know our core customers in this segment and we're going to reward the faithful" sort of car. There's nothing alienating here. It's as if someone at Munich HQ said, "Nein, sorry, but this is not the car on which we push the boundaries of our design language. Give 'em classic BMW and call it a day." I just wonder if it being made in Mexico vs Germany means they will push on some savings to us? :L
Wishful thinking, this is my first BMW anyhow and I'm kind of glad the next 2 isn't going bonkers |

What you will find is that the model would not be viable to produce at all at the anticipated sales volume and target price, without controlling the manufacturing and shipment costs by using a global manufacturing network. So you may have to thank BMW for manufacturing the car in Mexico, so that you can buy the car at all at a price you and all the other buyers are willing to pay, that make producing the model viable

It's looking very sharp from this angle. I'm surprised BMW is adding the M looking side mirrors.

In the spy photos I think the rear is a little tall for my taste, but so long as it’s not Gran Coupe level, I’ll take it. A brand new M240i may be in my future.
