XDrive squared vs staggered tires

Some aftermarket 19 inch wheels I've been interested in restrict me to having a squared wheel setup instead of the factory 225 front 245 rear. Pretty much all of the brands I contacted said to go with a 235/35/19 square. I don't track my car, but drive spiritedly when the opportunity presents itself on backroads. Does this affect performance in any way or is it negligible with Xdrive?
To me, fiscally it would make sense to buy 4 of the same tires and rotate them when required, but I'm perfectly fine with going for a different wheel setup if staggered tires are better.

Howdy!

Great question, one that has been asked many times. Check out these threads in the Wheel/Tire forum.

And here is Apex Racing Parts F22 wheel guide. EXTREMELY helpful.

As far as performance, it depends, and mostly boiled down to what tire you choose. Tire size, brand and category (max summer performance vs all season) are major factors when it comes down to performance. More so than if they are staggered or square. A square set up on decent max performance summer tires will blow doors on a staggered set up on all seasons or cheapo summer tires.

With that said, tires being equal, a square set up to me makes more sense. Our cars don't have tons of room for giagantor wheels like the M series or even the F30's have. The F22 is limited in its range of tires and wheels that will fit and not cause suspension or fender rubbing headaches. Performance wise, a square set up makes for more neutral car as well, especially for xDrive. the heavier front end wants to push and understeer a bit more than the rear drive cars. A square set up can help counter those tendencies.

I think the only place staggered wins for me is in the looks department. I have 19x8/9 BBS CHR's with staggered tires. I love the look, and the stance has a classic feel to it. But after seeing a few of these cars in person with square set ups, I think I may sell mine and go square. It just makes more sense on this car.

That is of course my opinion. Others may have a different take.

Good luck either way!

PS Not to throw a wrench into this. But you may want to think about 18" wheels vs 19". I sorta regret getting 19's as I feel like the car dances a bit on the stiffer sidewalls as well as makes the car crashy over potholes and junctions. Something to think about.

Just wanted to add about the 18"s vs 19"s.

I too like spidy512 regretted going 19 vs oem 18 on my last car. I ended up with 3 tires changed over busted sidewalls due to only getting nails and flats over 6 months.

19s are for the very wealthy who have a servant follow them in a car filled with spares.
No one else in their right mind should put them on this car.

Thanks a lot! This was extremely helpful. In terms of of the wheel diameter, I have quite smooth roads where I live, but I guess the only way to judge is to drive a car with 19s.

I'll definitely look into 18 inch options. Thanks for the input!

Non Italian cars need a spouse following
ready to jump out, wag a finger, and say
“I told you so” when shit happens.
