I don't know how I missed this thread, however living in New England in the countryside, it is common to have mice nest up on our cars. I spend my winters finding carpet bombing my garage with traps (about 20-30 at a time) which keeps the rodent population down to a manageable level.

I had most of my fuel injection wiring chewed on in the M235 about 2 years ago. Thankfully, after inspecting diligently with my collection of dental mirrors and a very bright flashlight, I was able to determine that no wires were compromised, only insulation.

Liquid insulation to the rescue; two hours of painstaking wire repair, but it sure beats the alternative! My mechanic thought the black insulation on the wiring was a bit unusual, until I explained...

Interestingly, I found out by showing a colleague my fancy 3.0L N55 engine. We noticed a few odd pieces of blue shop towel (I use the blue paper towels in by garage) and I was immediately alarmed and pulled the engine cover. Surprise!!!

We went through the same drill in New Hampshire and settled on cats as the best solution for our circumstances.

What convinced me to get cats was one year the wife's V70 T5 went in for a scheduled service that included replacing the air filter. Oops – the air box was chock full of mouse nesting material!

I figured the car must have been running awfully poorly and asked my wife. She said no, the car was fine during her DD duty. She also didn't notice any difference after the nest was removed and a fresh filter was installed. That was probably a tribute to both modern engine control technology and a housewife who doesn't lean on her car very hard. I'm pretty sure I would've noticed a drop in performance if it was my DD.
