Did they replace the Alternator? Or was it just loose/ out of alignment..

Strange issue for these cars, pretty rare IMO
They replaced the alternator.

Update, the sound is still there, replacing the alternator did not fix it. After researching in car sounds, I found that the sound is similar to a supercharger spool, but not as loud.

Will take it in again. They probably forgot that the car will only make the sound when warm.

What frustrates me is the Calgary BMW (the dealership) service drove my car for 50km and unplugged my dash cam.

Seems a lot for a test drive to find the problem. But the dash cam could be allowed based on state, county, country laws. Some states in the US don't allow recording without written consent even if it is inside your own car.

They probably also disconnected it to eliminate that as a variable for noise. Sometimes electronics send weird feedback through the speakers.

Sorry to revive an old thread. However I seem to have the same noise on mine, after listening to a few YouTube clips of the B58 and m140/m240 they seem to all make the same whiney noise from what I can hear. Did you manage to find out the cause of it at all?

Yes, it is normal ZF whine.

My 340i GT does the same.
