B58 oil pumps failing disastrously in cold climates

User mariusrisan posted to the BMW subreddit today with these photos of oil pumps that are seemingly becoming brittle and taking the engine out when they break down.

'G-series B58 owners in cold climates - check your oil pumps! We've had two almost new cars in our shop since february with blown engines due to the oil pump failing in freezing conditions. BMW have made an updated oil pump which replaces duoplex plastic with metal. The pictures speak for themself'

I wonder if this will eventually translate to breaking down due to age? I'll never understand why the German companies use so much plastic where there should be metal…

Curious how much the new part costs and how much labor is involved?

FWIW the G series uses the B58D and a quick check of Real OEM shows a different oil pump PN for our engines (M240) compared to what the G series are running. Now that does not mean we don't have plastic in ours but it is a different pump.

You're right! I misread G-Series as F-Series for some strange reason.

The F-series engines show a different part number, but there's understandably no teardown of the OG B58 fuel pump.

I've not heard anything of B58 oil pump issues here in Alberta, with thousands of vehicles in the BMW line up using them here and operated in temperatures down to -40C or so in the winter.

Although the engine may be started with oil at -30C, the oil is at 0C within 2km or so of starting, at +50C within 6km and +100C within 10km of a cold start at low temperatures, all with gentle driving until the oil is fully warm.

Hard to understand, the G01 M40i comes factory fill with 0W-20 and only 0W-30 is an acceptable alternative. Both have a pour point south of -40.

Maybe some rube put 10W-60 in it, because M oil. Have seen a couple people report garbage Euro shops putting 10W-60 in N55 and S55 cars.

If I were to guess, the plastic heat cycles with the oil and became brittle at low temp.

Im in michigan and so far have had a few record cold days here in the last few years (-45 without windchill I think 2 years ago?)

Havent had any issues. This winter has been particularly cold too. Cold enough to where my window motor would freeze and the window wouldnt "slide up" when the door was closed.

I would be more worried about that then the oil pump at this point. Cant drive it in that condition since the door wont actually lock shut.

Hi guys. There is an revised oil pump for the B58TU that has the rotor housing made from steel not plastic. i just did one today and i can confirm it.
