F22 - Long term reliability
Hi guys,
i just got my e92 325i back from a vanos solenoid replacement that sprung out of the blue, making it the third trip this year to my mechanic for various issues. Granted, the car is officially turning 12 this year with 148k kms on the clock, i'm strongly considering trading it in a for a 2. i'm still weighing my options between a MY15+ 220i or a MY14 m235i as i want those xenon headlights, none of that nasty yellow halogen bulbs. I think it's a widely known fact BMWs are engineered to fail past a certain 'use by' date, but i'd hate to throw a wide blanket on the the 2s as well as i've only heard glowing reviews on the drive and reliability so far. Has anyone driven the car past 100,000kms in Aussie road conditions care to comment on the car's performance and reliability into the 6 digit mileage zone? Thanks in advance! |

To be honest, I don't think there are many 2ers past 100,000kms... considering car is only max 4 years old... rarer to have a 2 door coupe to do that much driving.. (i'll wait for others who's approaching that mark to reply)
Personally if you're happy with the size of the car it's pretty great, back seats only comfortable for people under 5'9-5'10... boot space actually more than sufficient, and driver's space is more than enough considering you're not expected to have rear passengers that often (compared to 1er). As for 220i vs M235i... I'm going to be bias and say M235i, it's a great engine, great car, had a 228i loaner car for servicing, and a small warranty claim (don't worry nothing major), I don't think even that car compares, it's a massive difference in terms of performance, feel of the car, sound of the engine and most importantly the way it accelerates is different, obviously, 220 and 228 are still good cars (same chassis at the end of the day), if performance is not a priority. My car have done nearly 50,000km, even with full aftermarket exhaust and a tune, it's been faultless (touchwood)

you might try asking 1-series owners, you'd expect any issues to be shared to some degree
i hang out on this site and there's a m135 thread with a few chaps having 100+km done https://www.stereo.net.au/forums/top...755-bmw-m135i/

thanks for the replies fellas. the urge is growing stronger by the day. a 2014 228i is within my budget range now but i see a few m235is listed for 5 grand more but close to the 80k mileage meaning manufacturer warranty is out of the question.
the listings in NSW are also considerably cheaper... |

The m235i is as good as it gets for BMW reliability. The n55 motor had already been out for many years and was at the end of the design / improve cycle so all the kinks have been worked out. The newer m240 have a new motor style which I don't know about

so i got to testdrive a 228i today, and while i agree with most that there's ample power in the 4ycl, there's so many things within the cabin that just doesn't sit right with me.
Coming from a e92 with hydraulic steering, maneuvering the car certainly reminded me more of a japanese car, a lot lighter and less grounded, but i suppose same can be said of any car with electric steering...going into sport mode made the gear shifts more exciting but not overly so that i felt like going from an e92 to a f22 was a tangible improvement in driving experience (and the 25k I would've have had to cough up for the update). Also with the 228i, lotsa creature comforts were forewent, 4:3 LCD biz nav system annoyed me more than i could ever imagine and the lack of electric seat adjustments just reminded me of my good ol days in a corolla/i30. I'm scheduling in a date for a m235i testdrive when the dealer gets hold of it, i'm hoping it would be the upgrade i've been looking for. |

at 44k, drive hard since day 1.
Has over 30 hpde's on it. A dozen or so drag days, hundreds of long 3+ hour trips... Car is fantastic. No problems besides cracking rims on pot holes and random little things. get one.

Had my M240i for 50,000kms now, couple of minor warranty issues early on, nothing mechanical, but smooth sailing since. Chews fuel, tyres and rotors like a champ, but this was all expected from a performance car. Constantly puts a smile on my face.

thought i'd revive this thread. 2 yrs+ in and im still smittened by my m235i, no wandering eyes and it really helps the new BMWs have taken a huge tumble when it comes to appearances - let's just say the F series cars were peak BMWs when it came to a perfect blend of old and new. The 'G' series chassis lost their european flare and they now kinda blend in with their korean/japanese counterparts imo.
Anyway, I digress. I'm looking to keep my m235i for the long term and I've put in roughly 30ks in the 2+ years I've had her. Just shy of 70k on the clock, the electrical in my right tail light decided to call it quits and the right indicator is now malfunctioning due to a ground wire short. I've since placed an order for new LCI blackline tail lights along with new socket plugs to do the upgrade myself. I'm sure these events are gonna occur more frequently as my m235i ages, but I see myself owning this car for the next decade. I was just wondering if anyone here has crossed 200k mileage on Australian roads and if you have, would you care to share your experience keeping the vehicle, and the cost of doing so? |

Good to hear!
I'm considering purchasing a M240i to replace our F48 X1 (which SWMBO wanted — thankfully that's worn off). It replaced a M135i, which I loved. I suspect I know most things about the car bar the latest iDrive set-up, and am interested in anyone's thoughts about spec (yes, I know it is getting late in the lifecycle, but something tells me the next one won't be as good...or will be adorned with a grill from hell).

Had a M2C ordered a couple of years ago, decided I didn't want it and haven't changed my mind. Besides, this is the "family" car, replacing our X1

So, does the imminent arrival of an M2CS mean the P car has gone, John? 😢

Hey guys,
I've just put a deposit down for M240i and was wondering if anyone here has done some decent Kms on theirs and could tell me how their B58 is doing? |

I don't have excessive mileage, but I have 51k miles at the moment and the car still looks, feels, and drives as if it's fresh off the lot. I had to get a clockspring replaced under warranty, but I think that was just unlucky and it was just because it developed a squeak. No breakdowns, but I wouldn't expect any.
