Well after several months of NFF investigations and multiple pressure tests, BMW Germany have authorised a new turbo and exhaust manifold for my car. Not sure why the exhaust manifold unless the turbo mounting is different.

For reference, I was using 140ml of coolant every 1,000 miles. This is basically from min to max in the expansion tank. So over a 20,000 mile service interval this equates to 2.8 litres .... 1.4 litres every 10,000 miles.

Hopefully these monthly top ups are behind me

IIRC, the turbo and the exhaust manifold are an integrated unit.

So the coolant level in the main tank was fine? Only the expansion tank level would go down?

The main tank is for engine cooling the smaller tank is for the intercooler. Separate systems.

Nope the large expansion tank for the engine and turbo cooling was dropping from max to min every 1000 miles. The small expansion tank was ok and that is for the water to air charge cooler in the intake manifold (intercooler)

So did the dealer figure out if the coolant was running back into the intake or exhaust then? One way is better than the other, but neither is obviously good for the car. Glad they found a possible fix for you.

They found evidence of water stains in the exhaust down pipe and sent pictures to BMW Germany and they approved the turbo Change. Fingers crossed my monthly coolant top ups are behind me now 👍

Hi, I'm chasing very similar gremlins in my 2018 LCI 340iX (june 2018). Can you share any updates on whether the coolant is now holding? Also any further details on the paperwork involved with the warranty work? SIBs etc?

Thanks so much for posting your story.

So Germany has to authorize even just a turbo replacement? Engine i understand and that's common in the industry at this point but not the turbo, that's interesting if that's true...

Remember he is in England, I presume BMWNA would be the authority for us in the States.

Good point...
Still, i question why all that authorization power is needed for a turbo.

The turbo is not cheap since it also includes the exhaust manifold.

True but BMW does not separate it in the parts list so it is all or nothing.
