Foam behind engine - purpose?
Hi guys,
I don't have any issues with it, but what is the foam behind and under the engine cover for? Has anyone removed this to increase engine noise to the cabin? |

I am not sure exactly what parts you mean, but if your talking about the cover on the underside of the hood I would not remove it. It is there I would assume for many purposes. I know of people removing it for weight reduction on other cars and the paint on the hood had issues as it kept some of the heat from the engine off the hood and paint.

Did you read what I wrote? I said it WON'T even make a .01 second difference. Just take a big dump before you run a quarter and it'd be the same thing LOL You should remove yours too and do a few runs and let us know how much you didn't shave off the 1/4 SMH

That insulation on firewall is probably one of the last to remove for weight saving. B58 engine has timing chain in back of the engine. So BMW wants to add extra sound deadening material on firewall to reduce engine noise. Edit: I noticed the OP has M235. Never mind. It must be just a normal insulation. He pretty clearly wrote his comment tongue in cheek. Yet more evidence that light hearted comments should always include a ;-) just to make it clear to all. ;-)

1) The reduction of direct injector and engine noise. 2) To retain heat to assist with quicker cold engine warm up. The downside to this insulation is that it keeps things on top of the motor screaming hot including all the wiring. For the long term, especially given that this is a German car, that's scary. The M3/M4 S55 motor has a tiny engine cover that only covers the front half of the valve cover. The M2/M3/M4 also don't use the insulating panel on the hood. Point in, the hood paint can handle the heat. I'm not running the engine cover or hood insulation because I like the look of the naked N55, I like hearing more of the N55 scream (no difference in the cabin at lighter loads or idle), and I like that I've got nothing obstructing my view of the motor when inspecting it, which I do monthly or more. I'm currently in the process of modifying a plastic valve cover from a later 1990s 540 to cover the wiring harnesses to the front four coil packs. I hope to be done this weekend with the project. It's looking pretty sweet. |

I can't imagine what a new B58 looks like naked
I got a look at the 2018 M5 4.4-liter at the dealer, as many of you probably have. You couldn't cram a notebook in there. Enough worry that repair on the B58 VANOS would require an engine-pull. I just keep my fingers crossed. |

Yeah, that motor is hilarious in terms of access. The B58 is pretty bad as well in the 2 series. All the air to water intercooling parts consume a lot of space.
