I have had the stage one for over a year now. I had the dealer install it. I am not worried about warranty issues.

Drive-ability is stock, with no hiccups of any sort.

Very noticeable increase in power/torque. Eliminates the minor off idle lag that was in comfort mode.

Great tune, I would highly recommend it.

Hey this might be a blasphemous question to ask ... BUT have folks noticed a significant decrease in fuel economy with the Dinan stage 1 installed? Asking for a friend.

It really depends on your driving style. If you're hard into it it will decrease.
Here's a round trip into D.C from Philly including downtown D.C. traffic - Sport mode.

I haven't done any type of real measurement but can't say I noticed any significant difference. Believe I'm averaging 24.5 mpg over 13k miles or so.

Edit: sorry it's 23.5 mpg not 24.5

This. No one has issues with a JB4 on a B58. Way more bang for your buck too.

No decrease in fuel economy for me. With 80% highway I average 31 MPG. That still surprises me. That is in comfort mode maybe 75% of the time. Sport mode for engine and trans around town. Xdrive AT.

Update.
My BMW/Dinan dealer replaced the unit a few weeks ago because of recurring error codes. It was fine for a few weeks and about 1500 miles. Yesterday, after I started the car, the CEL remained on. I scanned it with my Carly adapter and I got two boost related codes.
Called the dealer and they said they have had a lot of issues with these units on 2 series, but not on the other models. And, Dinan_Engineering has't had any response/resolution/fix other than replacing the units. They haven't actually 'fixed' anything. My dealer has decided not to sell any more Dinan units until they have 'resolved/fixed' the issue.
I sent the scan report to them. They are going to send to Dinan and let me know next steps.
Now I'm in bypass mode again, indefinitely... My dealer has been great, but I am starting to lose faith in Dinan's ability to resolve this.

Thanks so much for posting this update. It will make me think twice before getting one of these for my new car. The whole point of paying the extra for Dinan was for the sterling reputation. I mean, if you are gonna muck about with a brand new $50K+ car ...

Seems to me that Dinan quality has perhaps taken a nose dive after the company was sold and moved across the country ... seemingly for the cheapest labor costs they could find.

Or is this a pretty isolated issue?

I’m having mine installed tomorrow... I hope they get these issues sorted out as I bought it thinking that it wouldn’t cause issues like these.

I've had my Dinan Stage 1 since February.

Not a single issue.

And I make use of every single extra HP it provides . Honestly surprised I have not broke something by now, LOL.

My dealer said they have five 2 series with these recurring CEL/code issues, but haven't seen it on the other models, e.g. 3,4,5.

Mine started having check engine light issue this week.
Light comes on, I put tune in bypass mode, light goes off a few hours later.
Next day I turn stage 1 back on. Check engine light stays off for a few days then comes back on.

Happened twice so far.

Not completely sure what is going yet. A bunch of sensor failed too. Car suddenly threw up a bunch of errors while I was trying to pass some one in eco pro mode. Then heavy vibration came, pull on the side of the road. Shut off the car, restart again and this happens (video). It does stop vibrating after start, back to a smooth idling.

Sorry for the upside down images.

Unhappy

Well I dropped mine off at the dealer today with a recurring check engine light.

I'll report back if it has anything to do with my Stage 1 tune.

I've had a recent unpleasant Dinan warranty issue. I threw a rod on my 228, with a Stage 1, while at an BMW Club HPDE. After slow walking me and the dealership for 2 months, Justin in their warranty dept offered to pay for labor, but not parts. Even though the Dinan warranty exclusion only includes timed events and races, Justin said an HPDE put the same stress on the car and therefore they weren't going to pay for the full repair. After I posted my experience on this site, they offered to pay for parts, but not the labor. The lessons I learned are a Dinan tune immediate voids the BMW warranty and the Dinan warranty doesn't necessarily replace it.

So I picked up my car from the dealer this morning.

This is the 2nd time I have taken it in for CEL lights. First time I got it back it went for about 1.5 months before the CEL came back.

They gave me a loaner the past week and everything was completely free and covered under warranty.

My rep told me there was a short in the Dinan harness causing too much boost signal to be sent and then it would eventually trigger the engine to cut boost as a safety measure.

Rep said they replaced the Dinan harness with a new one.

Car ran beautifully on the way to work felt like it was making good power.

I'll see how long this lasts.

Sorry to hear this. I have to say that really sucks! Dinan markets and sells parts for track use. What good is a tune from them if they won't stand behind it at an open track day?

I have not been to the track in my BMW, but used to go all the time. As I have a Dinan tune I guess I will have to get it removed before going to the track or risk no warranty

Comparing the experience on a 228i with a tune to the M240i with a tune is silly. The N20 historically has not been the best platform to exploit extra power, don't rush to judgement.
