Coding out cold start routine on *40i

Sorry, I have searched the sub-forum but can't see a clear answer to this.

Is it possible to code out the noisy cold start routine on the M240i and other cars with the B58 motor ? Very irritating at 5 in the morning, even with the stock exhaust.

I read the noise is due to the wastegate being open. Is that right ?

Here is the technical explanation from Artemis over at the M2 Forum. The paper he cites will give you the engineering details. So, no it isn't a coding thing it is an ecu programming thing.

You can't code it out but you can tune it out. I'm not sure what is available for the B58 motor but on the N55's Bootmod3 flash can disable cold start idle.

Thanks. Oh well, never mind. I won't be looking at ECU reflashing while under warranty, even if the B58 is cracked within the 3 years...

Yes, it's because the wastegate is wide open during warmup, bypassing the muffling effect of the turbo. There is no way to code this out, and even if it were, it might void part of your warranty or be considered tampering with emissions regulations. It may have something to do with getting engine oil up to temperature before building boost as well as providing a richer mixture to light off both of the catalysts.

I recently had my istep updated to the latest 18-03-×××

There were a number of changes I noticed which included the cold start being so quiet. Very noticeable change.

I am curious about this too. recently got an email from the HOA that a neighbor complained about how loud my car is. I do have the dinan midpipe and m perf exhaust, which is super loud on startup. I think it sounds awesome but I guess others feel differently! lol. I'm going to try to hit the throttle right after starting it up as that will usually make it quiet down considerably, but would love to be able to code it out to pacify the HOA and the neighbor. any thoughts would be appreciated! thanks!

There is an option in Bootmod3 to turn the cold start off.

Things like this are a reason I will never live in a development that has HOA.

Is feathering the throttle right after startup to quieten the noise detrimental to the car in any way? I have a nosy HOA as well and if I get a midpipe I fear I'll have to do this every morning..

good question and unfortunately I don't know the answer to it. also not sure it really works that great so my new strategy is putting it in reverse the second after I start it and drive off as quickly as I can without giving it much gas and keeping it in comfort mode. I think this helps to some extent but that initial startup sound is still really loud.

The reason bmw codes this start up process is to protect the turbo from low oil pressure at start up. The DME revs the engine to 1200 rpm to get the oil pressure up to snuff quickly. The waste hate is open so that there’s no demand on the turbo.

thanks for the explanation! I figured there had to be a good reason for it. so it sounds like coding this out or turning it off could be a bad thing for the car.

Incorrect. Cold start warms up the catalytic converter quicker, thus increasing it's efficiency and reducing emissions.

so does turning it off hurt the car in any way or does it just mean the car will pollute more when first started before cats warm up?

That's true, the 1200rpm idle does warm up the cats quicker. My 2001 330Ci did the same thing, only 1000rpm.

In or Out of Garage

Stupid question I know, but for those of you with garages in their townhomes, do you pull in or back out? I leave between 0545 and 0600 every morning and am trying to be cognizant of the neighbors. I just picked up an M240i with MPE and the bass is quite noticeable upon cold start, so I always throw it into gear a second or two after startup to get it to quiet down per the info in this thread. I've been pulling in with the assumption that it will echo less, but I got to thinking this morning that maybe the garage will soak up most of it. I haven't had a chance to test them both out as the cold start sequence is not an issue in the afternoon.
