Dinan Cold Air Intake - Worth it?
Hey guys
Dealer wants 880$ + tax for the cold air intake. Question I have is, is it worth it? Does it sound better with the MPE? Will I gain any power? Anyone have it? I know Dinan is pricey but I don't want any issues with my warranty. |

Not worth it for the power gains with a turbocharged engine as they are non-existent. Definitely worth it if you have the M235i and combine the CAI with Dinan's S2 tune. This combo is not available for the 228i, alas. Some people love the enhanced "whoosh" from the turbo with this mod and no tune but IMO it's way too much money for a "whoosh" with no appreciable engine performance gain.

The only reason to purchase one is for under-hood cosmetics. So unless you plan on your ride being a show car, Just say no.

That's the N52 engine, which was the N20's precursor. Totally different.
Seriously: If you want to spend $800-plus on better sound, put it toward an exhaust. The N20's engine management system and throttle-by-wire means any perception of throttle response gain anyone has is absolutely placebo effect. Same applies to the N55. The only way an intake may be beneficial is if engine management software is altered and other parts of the drivetrain are upgraded.

Well I have the MPE exhaust so it sounds great already. I just have always had a CAI and noticed a difference sound and power wise but perhaps this engine as you say is different. |

If you buy from the US plus exchange plus duty plus brokerage fees it'll be about $850.

"He is upgrading to stage II dinan tune, Today in fact. Makes sense to go with the dinan CAI since that is the CAI they engineered their tune with." His 0-60 runs are made after he had a Stage 2 Dinan ECU mod installed. The first ones are mere hours after, in fact. And 0-60 runs are NOT a good indicator of added power. Especially when A (pre-mod) and B (post-mod) runs aren't on the same day. The CAI probably helped a tad with the Stage 2 tune. On an OEM motor, though, it will likely do nothing -- or hurt it. Read through CAI threads on the F30 forums. Plenty of evidence there that backs up what I and others are trying to tell you: a CAI is worthless unless you upgrade other parts of the motor.

Definitely will get the whoosh and to me it is slightly more noticeable and louder at high revs. I paid under $550 for mine and installed it myself. It was worth it to me. It depends on who you ask on these forums. People like to spend a lot of money for a BMW and then buy cheap aftermarket parts and tunes, those are usually the people that tell you not to buy Dinan. Doesn't make sense to me, to each their own.

Dinan does have a gnarly S4 tune that comes with their Big Turbo mod for the N55/N20 which did just pass emissions regs for fifty states but it's a very expensive, radical mod that is aimed at track rather than street use. I've probably hit the ceiling for emissions-legal, non-warranty-jeopardising mods for my N26 228i (see sig), and this makes me a little sad sometimes when I feel I should have ordered the N20, but, as I always say, as presently configured, the car is very quick indeed on the street, more so than the Lotus I once owned. If you are looking for a really transformative mod for your 228i having done the Dinan S1 tune, I cannot overstate the effect their springs and bump stops, plus their Shockware mod, have on this car's handling, dynamics under load, and ability to put the power you have down on the road.

I'm out of the city until next Wednesday. I can try next weekend but I bet if you did a search on the forum or maybe even YouTube you might find a video sooner.
