front vs rear tire pressure question

The label recommends 33 PSI F/41 PSI Rear for my m240xi with the staggered non-runflats: 225 40 R18 F and 245 35 R18. I just switched to a square setup for the winter with 225 40 R18s. What should the pressures be set to? All 33?

Good question. I run square 225s on 17" wheels in the winter and have chosen to continue using the staggered summer tire pressures of 35/39. FWIW, I only take my car out for a drive every three or four weeks.

Since dealers sell winter tires, I wonder what they would recommend.

Our F30 had a square set-up. The sticker on the door jamb listed the same pressure F&R.

I think the recommended pressures have to do with the rear weight bias of the convertible. I found the same recommendations for the square setup as the staggered with the convertible. I am going to try that and see how it drives.

the owners manual has a lot more info on this, if u remember correctly. should have different specs for how fast you're driving and maybe how much weight your carrying?

Garage List
I am running Michelin IceX on 17" wheels at 36 psi all around. Seems to work well for me.

I have staggered OEM tire setup but I run 39 cold all around. I found the recommended 35/39 to be suboptimal.

Why is that?

My door plaque recommends 32/36 Not clear why a square setup on a balanced car would benefit from different pressures. (230 with 205/17)

I like a couple extra psi for a couple reasons;

Allowance for colder temps to come

Allowance for gremlins to steal a little air over time that they never seem to return

A little more protection from potholes

I looked at the M240 recommendations in the owners manual and for the 18” square, it says 32/38. They don’t list a square set up for the 17” for the M240, but for the 230 it’s 32/33.

With pothole season approaching I swapped out
My 18”rfts with 17” BBS sx with contDWS06
Experimenting with 34psi front 41psi rear may add a few pounds in the front I think the 17s look better on the 2 series may leave them on

I'm not sure how to explain in other than I find turn-in much better when I run the fronts at 39 vs 35. I spent an hour one Saturday going back and forth between the two and I was surprised at how noticeable the difference was.

I just put the 225/40-18 Michelin Pilot Arctic Alpin square setup on yesterday and aired up to 35 all around (cold pressure). I wouldn't overthink it too much on winter tires. Anywhere from 32-39 is fine.

You can't go wrong with the above philosophy. I find the biggest issue is finding an accurate tire gauge. I've used a variety of them all report different pressures when tested on the same tire (as much as 4 pounds diff at times).

I finally arrived a a method that seems to work pretty well. Using the "Husky" pump gauge I run the PSI's 4 lbs more than recommended and then tested with another gauge they are "spot on". The TPMS show the correct pressures also.

If you follow a 35 PSI middle ground you should be in a decent tire pressure operating range.

Agreed, keeping in mind that for every change of 10 degrees F, psi will vary approximately 1 psi. If you use your own compressor in your heated garage at 70 degrees, for example, on a "cold" tire, and drive out into 20 degree weather, overfill by 5 psi.

I just swapped out a couple of weeks ago. I had the staggered non-run flat MPSS setup for summer (probably the same as the OP). I went with the 18" square BMW winter set (385 wheels and WinterContact tires). The dealer did the swap and aired them at the same pressures as the staggered summer setup (33/41 psi) FWIW.

This is what the manual recommends for a convertible anyway. I finally RTFM.
