Looking at a 2017.. is there any reason I should wait for a 2018 or 2019 instead?

Mine is '17 Estoril Blue 6MT. Mild mods - Dinan Elite V2, Dinan cat back exhaust, Dinan CF intake. 19" BBS wheels. (18" winters on now). I don't track the car but "spirited" driving. Bought it CPO from local BMW dealer with 25k miles. Now 60k -ZERO problems.
Why not?!

Don't believe any pre-LCI hate. I've owned my 2017 pre-LCI M240i since 2019 and have had zero issues and don't know of any specific issues even related to pre-LCI cars for that matter. Slight changes of the interior design, digital dash and a few other small things not really worth paying more for.

Yeah I do like the digital dash 😀 but it's not gonna force me to buy an lci car.

correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the only difference in dash the color of the backlight?

orange vs white? They're both partially digital...

Nope. My dash (RPM/Speedo) is analog. There is a small portion where the M240i logo is on the center bottom of the dash is digital but that's it.

The difference between the 2017 Pre-lci and Lci are:
New rear LED light - better

New interior trim, not symmetrical and the m-performance interior trim looks better on the pre-lci - Worse

LED headlights. I like the pre-lci day running light look better, but LEDs are nice - Draw

New dash, not digital but LED backlit. Subjective, i prefer the pre-lci looks but the LCI dash got oil temp on the dash so that's really good! - Better

I have a pre-lci and all I miss is the oil temp on the dash, crazy that it doesn't have that honestly. You can use MHD or something similar to read it though.
If all the options, color and price between a LCI and pre-lci are the same, go for a LCI. But I would prefer a pre-lci with good option over a lci with worse options.

PRE-LCI m240ix is also pretty good odds of getting one without a radiator guard.

That is the most substantial difference, and can be remedied with zipties and honeycomb mesh from amazon.

non-LCI tail lights are also 100% likely to leak water and burn out. Outside of that, no noticeable significant differences

I have 2017 and have had no issues. However, I think the biggest change is on the motor. Timing chain moved from near firewall in the back to the front. That could be costly repair if it’s ever needed.

Fyi..

I decided on a 2017

Had a forum member here offer me.his with a ton of nice upgrades for a great price but it was just too far for travel. Again, I appreciate it if you see this..

Ended up finding one almost immediately on passing that I didn't think I could do but to my surprise the dealer was willing to work with me some. I typically don't expect that from bmw dealers on top of it lol.. anyway, road trip tomorrow to get it.

So thanks everyone for your insight!

I bought a certified 17 two years ago at 29k and now at 55k. Tuned right away with MHD, upgrades in signature. Solid car... the manufacturer will add and correct things as the model ages so in theory, the most recent year should yield the best result from that standpoint... good luck...

Hot dam, he got a B58 too

If you kept your N55 flexfuel kit, you could've asked PTF to send you the B58 harness to switch over to B58. It's literally plug and play, and all good, that's what I did with my N55 flexfuel kit, the guys were nice enough to send me a B58 harness.
Did you find out if your DME is OBD unlockable or bench?

congrats! Hope to see some pics.

Dme had to be unlocked as it was updated by dealer.. 😞

No flex fuel kit.. I need to get one
