Active Autowerkes IC users chime in
FBO M235 here.
On a 80 degree day my IATs shoot up to 120+ after a long pull (think 40-130.) Is this normal for this IC? I've seen graphs of other ICs (Wagner, ER,) and they don't produce nearly the same amount of heat. |

I'm don't have an aftermarket IC or tune, but my IATs during normal driving in 80 degree weather hover in the 100-120 degree range depending on traffic and if I'm at a stop or cruising. If I do a 3rd gear pull, the IATs go into the 130-140s. I'd imagine a 4th gear pull would be even worse. So, I'd say you AA IC is doing it's job. Turbos generate a ton of heat under boost. No way around it.

I've got the AA IC because that's all that would fit in my convertible - I haven't paid much attention in a while but what you're seeing seems about right.

Active Autowerke intercooler is a 5" direct replacement. Its meant for lightly tuned cars in moderate temps. If you car is stage 2 or pushing high boost, you will need a 6" intercooler to keep or a core with a very high density

18.5 psi and IATs in the 120 degree range after a long pull isn't bad at all. You'll NEVER get close to ambient regardless in IC. Turbos generate a ton of heat. I'd stick with what you have as if you go too large, you introduce crap daily driveability due to pressure loss.
PLUS huge metal intercoolers heat soak terribly in typical daily driving unless you're constantly cruising or live in an area that doesn't experience 70+ temps. Think about it. You've got a huge metal device sitting right in front of a very hot radiator all the while minimum air is flowing through the IC, radiant heat is coming from the radiator, and minimal air is flowing through the IC because minimal throttle is being used. Then there's the pressure loss of a bigger IC, thus more lag and reduced throttle response. In conditions like this, the smaller stock plastic and metal IC is monumentally better, even running more boost assuming you're doing shorter pulls or lower gear pulls. It's why race car parts are generally terrible for daily driving and why you need to mod according to the most common type of driving. Vendors won't typically tell you about these things. They want to sell parts and will overstate the positives and understate the negatives. Buyers need to do their due diligence and understand what they are buying.

The AA FMIC is a good upgrade for typical Stage 1 cars. Although no FMIC will really get the same temps as ambient through a pull, a good quality FMIC will usually stay in the 20 Degree range of ambient. Of course there are many exterior factors that can affect this so it's not exactly cut and dry or black and white as to what to expect. A larger quality FMIC won't necessarily have more pressure drop then stock, in fact some do an even better job. What we primarily see in this market is price sensitivity and lack of research and understanding of what the parts do and how they work. IE Customers sending us datalog information of their IAT's in traffic... Yea. Forums are great for information, some is good and some is bad. Some is right and some is way off. It can be hard to sift through, especially for newcomers. Take information with a grain of salt. Look for data, I know it's hard on this platform. Lastly, talk to a trusted vendor who understands the parts, your needs/wants and goals.
