^ This is what I've been told as well. My track pads don't have them. And for brake Q's I'd put in a plug for Zeckhausen Racing - they customize their recommendations, and I got a ton of useful info when I called to order.

I took a grinder to mine yesterday so my 17" track wheels would fit in the back. It makes me laugh that these cars need more brake clearance in the rear compared to the front. Doesn't seem to affect braking performance so far. It makes sense that track pads don't have them. They are usually much louder then street pads.

I've been told the same thing by a couple of senior BMW dealer mechanics. (Both serious racers, from car families, so they aren't hacks. I guess they could be repeating folklore , but I think they are right.)

The small brake pad weights are for noise reduction and work in two ways:
- reduce squeal frequency due to added mass, hence a lower pitched sound. - split the resonance peak if the weight is properly matched to it’s attachment plate to oscillate in anti-phase to the pad, hence reducing resonance peak gain. |
