Garage Door Programming - No Joy
I have watched 5 You Tube videos, read the owners manual, tried it all. I cannot get my m235i to sync up with my hand held garage door opener. I tried both ways, with the remote an inch or two from the sensor on the mirror and also after hitting the button on the back of the button to go into LEARN mode.
Any secret tips out there that may be the missing link for me? Thanks. |

It works just like this some openers give you 30 seconds once you push the learn mode to get back in the car and push the button |

It can be a pain. I always forget how to do it when my wife or I get a new bmw. We have to use the learn button on the side of the opener. Sometimes it takes a couple tries before it works.

Assuming your car isn't new be sure to wipe the memory first

Yes, I've wiped the memory and repeated the steps per the newly supplied video, which are the same steps as the other people in the other five or so videos. I am completely stumped....but thanks for the suggestions. I am not kidding when I say I have tried atleast 50 times now.

Are you trying to program button 1 or button 2?
I had no luck programming button #1, but when I tried 2, it worked the first time. After that, I was able to go back and successfully program 1 as well. YMMV |

1. First press and hold both the door opener and the button on the mirror. Watch for the flash sequence. 2. Quickly go to the overhead (OH) unit attached to the garage ceiling and press the "learn" button. Make sure the light or other indicator that the OH unit is in "learn" mode is on. 3. Quickly return to the vehicle and press the button on the mirror deliberately (press and hold for a couple of seconds then release) 3 times. Certain OH units are finicky, especially those with better security. |

This stuff is so frustrating even for someone working in IT (for any car) and so many videos seem to have slightly different instructions.
I have a rolling code garage (direct drive/Sommer). It took me about a half hour but finally got it working (why it worked finally I have no clue). After attempting the various video instructions, 1. I cleared homelink by holding button 1 & 3 until rapid flash (20 seconds) 2. Held buttons 1, 2 & 3 until the light went out (20-30 seconds) 3. Hit the Learn button on the garage door opener (i tried just hitting the Learn button once, I tried holding the Learn button down longer until it was flashing) 4. And finally hit my preferred Homelink button 3 times and it finally seems to be working. |

I don't have the buttons on my current BMW however my parents have homelink in their non BMW cars and they cannot get them to work as their overhead door opener is too old.
I will be programming my new 2020 2er once I pick it up so we shall see. |

It seems weird to me that I have to actually start my car to get the garage door open. I don't remember a car that didn't have the buttons live once I entered the car.

It is a bit more secure, making it harder to use the door opener if someone breaks into the car when parked outside.

Some garage door remotes send the same signal every time. If you buy a new remote you have to set the dim switches or something to get it on the same signal as your old remote. If anyone has a "reader" near you when you open the garage, they now have the signal and can open your garage door from their "reader".
Most newer garage doors have a "rotating" code meaning it sends a new code every time you push the button using an algorithm. The remote knows the algorithm and the door motor knows the algorithm, so when you use it the door opens. If someone "reads" you transmitting to open your door, when they try to open your door they dont know the new code and they cant open your door. If you get a new remote, you have to push a "learn" button on the motor and click your new remote a few times so now the new remote and the door both know the algorithm and they will work. If you have this type, you have to do the same thing with your homelink button in the BMW. The book doesnt say this. Non rotating code garage door remote: Follow the book directions: hold the button to get into learn mode, hold the remote button and the homelink button, they are now sending same signal and will work. Rotating code garage door: Do the same as above, so now your BMW now knows the rotating code signal your remote is sending. But the garage door motor doesnt yet know the new rotating code algorithm of the "new remote" (your BMW homelink). Then you go inside the garage to the door motor and put it into learn mode (usually a button), quickly get to the BMW and now push your homelink button at least twice. Now the BMW homelink button algorithm and the garage door algorithm are in sync. And it should work. Good luck! |
