New Owner - Dumb Questions

Just got a 2017 240i and have a few dumb questions.

Dumb question #1: When using the fob or interior trunk release is the trunk not supposed to open all the way up? It pops but must be manually opened the rest of the way. I have not seen this on any modern car so I am not sure if mine is just broken.

Dumb question #2: Parking sensors work pretty well when backing out but immediately turn themselves off and do me no good when trying to park at my destination. Even if I turn them on just before entering the parking space they rarely find the curb. Is this normal? Not used to sensors turning themselves off.

Dumb questions #3: Auto start/stop is always set to off on my car and does not come on unless I turn it on. Is this normal? All other car companies are the opposite and make you turn it off. Not complaining but just not sure if this is how it is supposed to work.

I am certainly not an expert in all the details, but perhaps the following might help:

1) My trunk does not open up all the way, just releases.
2) Hmmm, not totally sure what you are asking, but when backing up they seem to work as advertised. When pulling into a space going forward, they do not operate....
3) I believe you can set it either way. If it is set for engine running all the time, it will stay that way even when the car is shut off. Same for the other mode.

Good luck with your new ride.....

I own a 2015 m235i so I assume its the same..

#1 yes just unlocks pops open, no full opening trunk for me.
#2 not sure, don't have pdc.
#3 if you see the light on above start/stop it is disabled, light off -> enabled. It will remember your choice, unless you go into eco mode where it will enable automatically.

1. I prefer it this way. If you accidentally hit the trunk button on your fob in your pocket, I'd rather it silently unlocks and doesn't swing open telling everyone nearby "come steal my stuff!"

2. Why would you want PDC on while you're driving? It'd go off at every single red light when someone pulls behind you.

3. You likely have hit the ASS OFF button above your start/stop button. Take a look. I bet the orange light is on .

I have had several cars (from other manufacturers) with PDC and it isn't that I want it on when I drive but this is the first car I have seen that turns it off so that it does no good when pulling into a forward parking spot. Just have not seen that before. Seems odd since curbing can ruin the front of a car. But what really confuses me is that when I do remember to turn it on just before pulling into a spot, it never finds the curb and I could still hit it.

I can tell you coming from an Audi, the parking sensors don’t work that great, especially the front ones.

I can tell you coming from an Audi, the best thing about Audi is coming from it.

The front sensors don’t seem to recognize a curb or parking stop, I just did a curb rash on my front bumper, not happy. I’m looking at getting some bumper scratch plates from Scratch Armour. They do come on automatically when pulling into my garage or if there’s a front wall in a parking structure.

Whenever it's a concern, hit the parking assist button below the driving mode selector and choose to turn on the rear camera. Assuming you have your sensors enabled when reversing, it will also turn on the sensors when moving forward.

I've heard that if you ask them to, the dealer will fix the trunk so it does pop up (I've gotten loaner 3 series that did); I personally prefer that it stays low, so haven't tried this to verify it myself.

+1

I do the same thing with mine, as my garage is rather tight currently.

Mac, BTW, no dumb questions here. Thank you for your post! That is what it's for.

My 2019 230i front and side sensors activate automatically when I park in a tight space, but my 2016 428i sensors have to be manually activated by pushing the park button. I wonder if this is tied to the parking assist option as the 230i has it but not the 428i. I just used the parking assist today to parallel park and it’s amazing but with some anxiety doing it - I don’t have that “not in control anxiety” when I do the parallel parking myself.

The sensors, front and rear, are all activated when you put the car in reverse and all remain on when you then move forward
If you do not put the car in reverse but want the front sensors to be activated, you must first hit the park sensor button
For example, if I manage to enter my garage directly without first backing up, the front sensors will not go on even as I get very near to the wall, unless I manually turn on the sensors. If I first back up, the front sensor will be activated when I then go forward.
The same will happen when parking, parallel or not. I often pull directly into a space that has a light pole at the end. In that case, I have to push the sensor button in order to get very close to the light pole.
I am not sure why this is so, but it is.

Glad a fellow Newb asked. I had no idea PDC was something that could be manually activated.

I see you have a 2019 model, do your parking sensors activate automatically? My 2019 model sensors activate automatically when I’m slowly pulling forward into a parking spot. I also have the parking assistant, so maybe the auto-on is a feature of that option.

Our 2016 428i however, needs to be manually activated when pulling forward into a parking spot; it does activate automatically when in reverse.

Nope. Only in reverse. I don't have the parking assist, so that must be it.

Forget come steal my stuff, I don't want it to open up in the rain! I've come out a few mornings, started the car and found out the trunk is open. I think it's too easy to accidentally hit the button on the fob.

My trunk is open every time I get in to drive it. I don't drive it often, so I never remember to make sure it's closed before climbing into the driver's chair. We need a button to close it from inside the car!
