Review of my loaner -'19 M240

I took my wife car into service yesterday at Crevier BMW and was given M240 with 3k on odometer. Initially, I didn't care much for me. However, after driving around for 1/2 the day, I felt like this is a great bang for bucks car.

While the throttle response was improvement over M235 I remembered, the exhaust on M235i was more pronounced. I didn't hear as much exhaust overrun on downshift. May be the previous M235i had different exhaust but I think M240i is on a little muted side.

The suspension and ride comfort is just ride for me. My wife, however, complained that the car was too bumpy. We took M240i for Thai food lunch 25 miles away. After we got home, she complained that he back hurt. Man, you can't please the boss of the house.

The only complaint I have is fuel consumption. Either I enjoyed the car too much or it has small tank, I ran down over 1/2 tank in just one day.

I even looked up CPO on BMWUSA to see how cheap I can find M240. The price is still up there over 30k. 2015 M235Xi, on the other hand, can be had for 25k. I think it may be a good car for my son (trade in his '12 Jetta for 235xi). He just have to wash more dishes at work and pickup a 2nd job mowing lawn.

To owners of M240 out there, enjoy your car!

Yah, the 13 gal tank doesn’t last as long between fills, wish it had at least a 16 gal tank but size of the car probably is the limiting factor. My E46 which is about the same size had a 16 gal tank.

I'm guessing that your son is in his late teens or early twenties. If so, I respectfully suggest that a powerful car like an M235 is unwise for someone that young.

Word, that vehicle reaches some scary speeds very quickly..

No way I give one to my hypothetical kids, the temptation is too risky..

Roger that!

As much as I may think that my son is a good boy, he is far for being responsible enough to drive anything more than 130HP. My wife was a school teacher for 15 years before she retired early to take care of our teenage children. She prohibited me to allow him to drive my tuned F80 or other M in the house until she thinks he is ready. Meanwhile, he gets the satisfaction of changing wheels before autocross and track day.

Btw, I bought my first BMW in my early 30s, 184HP in-line 6. He will have to save up and get his own BMW if he wants one. He will get to feel the hard work to buy, to owe, and to upkeep one.

I agree with your wife regarding the ride. I was lusting for an M240 CPO because it was only a few $k more than a 230 but after test driving the two cars back to back over the same roads it was clear to me that the M240 had a much stiffer suspension even in comfort mode. So it's a 230 for me even though the M240 drive train performance is fantastic.

I want to drive a 240i just to see if I can feel any difference, specifically with the torque. Would’ve liked the newer engine, but can’t deny the 235 is one of the best used car bargains right now.

My son's first car was a 1975 2002; I sent him to the two day teen school at the BMW performance Center as well as Street Survival. I wanted him to learn how to drive. Despite the wailing from a few hand-wringing bed wetters he survived just fine. He's borrowed my 2er a few times with no issues.

Nice!
I think 1975 2002 is more precious than any newer 2/3 series BMW.
BMW Performance Center may be a good BD gift, I can go too. There is one about 2 hrs away in Thermal, CA.

Thanks,

My beautiful wife and our '75 2002 in 1977 in the AZ desert. You are right, sir, it was precious.
Had an E46 and an E85 (Z4) and an M240i now and can't help but love its overall greatness. But...you know the rest..

Since we are reminiscing the 70's, my first drive in a 2002 was a 1973 model I borrowed from my cousin to take my date to a class banquet in the mountains. I don’t know which was more memorable, driving the Bimmer or the date - I think it’s driving the Bimmer as I can’t even recall who my date was, lol.

The first Bimmer I owned was a one year old E21 325i that I drove for 7 years and have been a 3-series fan until this current 2-series which brings back memories of the iconic 2002.

Agree, I sometimes wonder if I'm mature enough to be trusted with it, and I'm in my fifties

It's amazing the rate at which the car can build speed.

On a side note, I saw the son of a family acquaintance the other day. Brand new driver's license. In a Roush Mustang. I was incredulous. Might as well give the kid a live grenade and tell him to make sure he never pulls the pin.

If you know your kid, it's your prerogative to trust them with a fast vehicle. But I personally find that to be a tone-deaf move.

When the 2007 E92 335i was now just released with its powerful twin-turbo motor, with its like almost mythical availability, I remember reading a story of these two 17 year old kids that crashed and died, driving one at high speeds.

The minute I was finish reading, I started thinking like "duh" what did the parents expect was going to happen when you give an inexperienced person a powerful vehicle that can hit 60mph, in under 5 seconds.. :

The difference is night and day. I can tell you that. I had a 16' M235i for 3 years and absolutely loved it. I was hesitant about replacing it with the M240i the B58 is a monster. It pulls like a freight train down low and slingshots up to redline. The N55 made great power you just had to rev it out. The nod on engine note does go to the N55 though.

Agreed that the exhaust burbles and pops were great on my 2016 M235xi and are pretty well non-existent on my 2018 M240xi.

Yah, but the M240's B58 is already so stupid fast that I never get it out of comfort mode.
