Offset of wheels

The current offset on my wheels = 45mm.
Does it matter much if I get wheels that have smaller offsets?
Doesn't look like there are a lot of 3rd party wheels made with 45mm offsets. Most are smaller, like 40mm, 38mm.

The OEM wheel I have currently are:
- 225/40R18
- wide = 7.5”
- offset = 45mm
- bolt pattern = 120mm x 5

Tons of posts on here that cover wheel specs that fit on here. Comb through the wheel and tire section, see what offsets and wheel sizes that vendors offer and what others have fit without issues, than plug those into willtheyfit.com as factory numbers, and the numbers for the wheels you're looking at. If they show 19x9et45 is flush and you're looking at 19x9.5et40, then you know and the website will show you that your new wheel will stick out (poke) because the 9et45 was flush.

What are you looking to do? A set of winter wheels & tires? Run wider tires than 225? Do you want a "square" set up or staggered?

Those are the stock specs for M240i front wheels. I'm running 15 mm spacers all around without issue, on stock suspension, which is effectively running 30/37 offsets on the stock wheels.

I have already replaced my tires on the old oem rims. Found out that the repairs for the large curb scratch will run me $225 per wheel.
I’m considering replacing all the rims with 3rd party ones that look better.
I want to keep the new OEM-sized tires, of course.

Back to the original question: will offsets that are smaller than the oem 45mm be a problem with fitting?
Is it safe to drive around with it poking out?

Yes it’s safe to drive around with them poking out, so long as it’s not excessive like and offset if 15 where the extreme poke could cause you to hit the fender when you turn the wheel

I put 15mm spacers in the rears and 12mm spacers in the fronts for OEM wheels and tires. works wonders and i am lowered 1". You can do 15mm extra all around easy

If you go thru Tire Rack they will verify fit for you. If you stick w/ same 7.5 width, then the change in offset will move the wheel a similar amount, so you can sort of eyeball if you have room - 5mm shouldn't be a big deal, and lots of stuff is available in 40 offset. I decided to go with an extra half inch of rim width, so as to get a stiffer fit (8" and 8.5" OZ's, both in e/t 40, with stock width tires). You get a little more poke with this, but not bad (the rears really like a deeper offset - I think stock is 50 or 55 - but the OZ's don't come that way). If you want a really cosmetic look, you may want to stick with wheels that you can get in those larger offsets.
