M235i overheating at idle

So everyday I drive about 12 miles for my daily commute and the past 2 days when I get to my destination about 3-5 minutes of idling I get engine temp to high to drive cautiously. If I leave it in for about another 60 seconds I get the red engine over heat shut off. Only happened when I was stationary any thoughts?

I drive a 2015 m235i manual with vrsf charge pipes and muffler bypass

Water pump or fan is dead or dying. You need to get this fixed ASAP and probably shouldn't be driving. You don't want to warp that $6K cylinder head.

How can I go about checking the pump and fans to figure out which one is failing?

My fans were screaming when my pump died, surprisingly it never over heated, just went in and out of limp mode.

okay, yeah i haven't heard any change in noise in my fans. only thing is I tried to turn on the heat (supposed to draw heat from the engine) to try and help a little and my heat was blowing out a very slight amount of 70 degree air and no where near 84. my heat has never had any issues until now. not sure if that has anything remotely to do with it.

however I have a appointment with BMW set to get it looked at when I originally only needed to go in to get my oil changed. sadly my warranty ran out in january. i only have 43k miles on my car too.

If your heat is not working that also means your coolant is not moving around. Water pump is dead. Usually you fan in the engine turns on high and is basically as loud as a trucks fan.

okay, but the AC works only when moving if i'm stopped or almost stopped it finishes the last little bit of cold air and then it blows room temp air out. and still have not heard the fans kick on higher than usual.

Check your fan. Mine recently died with similar symptoms to yours, AC was only cold when moving and the car temperature was getting hot in traffic, although the heat worked exceptionally well.

You can check your fan by turning your AC on. When the AC kicks in the fan should turn on (open hood and see if it's turning).

Otherwise it is likely your water pump.

Car has already gone into bmw, they quoted me $12,000 to fix the fans and they suggested a new trans. Took it home and looked at it my self and the relay switch was bad. $33 to fix my overheating issues. I ordered a new fan also and tested it in pair with the original and the original fan was in good condition still. Getting my trans looked at 3rd party since I’m out warranty anyways.
