They don't retract, but they do pull out. You need a firm grip. Pull straight up and hold on tight! They have a tendency to release suddenly and go flying into orbit! I did it a couple of weeks ago and it dramatically improves rear vision.

Yep...did this to the wife's 228 convertible and while it took some effort, it definitely improves rear ward vision.

I am apparently the weakest person on the forum since I could not pull mine out for the life of me. There is a friction clip which holds them in place, if you can't pull yours out, fold the back seat down, remove the plastic cover which covers the bottom of the headrest, and then you can easily release the clips on each side with a pair of pliers or flathead screwdriver and it'll slide right out.

On the convertible there is a roll bar behind the headrests, so they do not fold (otherwise a back seat passenger could have their head crushed by the roll bar in the event of a rollover).
I considered trying to find a pair of the folding headrests but since no one fit in the back seat when I was driving getting rid of them entirely was much better for the rearward visibility (Which is awful with them in place).

^I'd agree with that - other than once or twice with a 4-year-old grandchild in a car seat, nobody has occupied the rear seat of our previous 128i convertible or our current 228i, particularly with the wind deflector fitted.

I am aware this is an old thread but am adding this because there is an easier way to remove the rear headrests of the 2016 + BMW 228i convertibles. Without tools, taking apart the seats or risk of your headrest flying across the room. I currently own a 2016 F23 Cabrio and wanted to remove the enormous, view-blocking, hunks of leather. Man! they are way too big for the peephole that we get for a back window!
I read this thread and several others just like it. I admit it made me nervous to even mess with the headrests. I went into the task expecting a battle of wills. When I pulled on the headrests it was exactly what you have read above, they wouldn't budge. They felt like the hammer of Thor was holding them in place! I felt defeated, for sure. So with the thought of my recent ex-wife in mind (I'm joking... sort of), I decided to try a different approach, "Don't pull, Push!!" With the heel of my hand I proceeded to more or less uppercut the bottom front edge of the headrests. IMPORTANT: For this to work, the "Rocky" theme song must be playing at max volume, unless you live in a condo. With two crushing, upward blows (not hard, seriously) they loosened and easily came out. No WD40, no need to buy replacement parts. Just a decided TKO. Man 1, Headrests 0 "Adriannnneee!!!" Last edited by bstone995; 05-09-2019 at 08:17 AM.. Reason: edit text |
