Driving Roads Seattle Area

Hey Guys,

I was gonna post in the regional forum but it's pretty dead.

Can any of you guys in the Pacific Northwest reccomend good driving roads around the Seattle area?

Also what are the quality of the roads like? Lots of potholes or okay?

Thanks!

If you want speed and tickets, Head South and East on 101 out to the coast..

For more fun, head North to catch Highway 11 at Burlington, aka "Chuckanut Drive".. Bonus points if you take highway 9 North..

Even better is Highway 542, "Mount Baker Highway" from Bellingham, East up to the top of the mountain.. It's truly one of the best drives in this state.... I did it two weeks ago and the car was literally asking for more at every corner. The pavement is mostly new and clean.. It's an amazing drive.. Have some dashcam footage of it and might upload it..

Others are Highway 2 over the pass headed East and the classic Highway 20 loop..

Get the fuck out there.. It's a amazing State and a wonderful time to beat the crap out of a fun car..

Since you didn't get much response I'll give you one that isn't that close to Seattle, but you can do it. Head toward Ellensburg and take the Yakima River canyon to Yakima. It's probably the best road in Washington to drive, especially with the windows down because the sound echo's off the canyon wall. Plus the view is amazing.

Here's a google maps URL

Just look at the section of road on Google Maps, all twisty and stuff. Super fun road. Then you can drive it back, grab dinner in Ellensburg and head home.
EDIT:
Take a look at the google earth view of this stretch and you'll start to get an idea of why it's unique.

I would recommend checking and seeing if the local BMW car clubs do driving tours ..

Puget sound has a lot of events and also there is the inland empire chapter as well

Most of these have already been mentioned, but to summarize the list and add a couple:
  • Highway 20 out to Winthrop, back on 2 or 2/97/90. If you have more time, loop up through the Okanagan Valley and further out into north-eastern washington (97/20/21/2) Leave early for this trip so you can enjoy the run out 20 without having to deal with too much traffic
  • Run Canyon Road (821) out to Yakima from ellensburg, return on 12/410 or 12/123/410 through Rainer National park. The drive from the east park entrance up to paradise is a lot of fun.
  • The road up to hurricane ridge - Olympic National park out on the peninsula
  • With less time available, hop the ferry over to whidbey and work your way up to Anacortes for dinner on the back roads on the western side of the island. The roads aren't as curvy as some mentioned above, but it can be a nice afternoon of driving

I've been taking about one weekend day a month away from the madness of work, and spending 5-12 hours just driving one of the above routes. 542 up to Baker is next on the list.

There are some good roads in Snoqualmie valley that don't take hours to get to, but depending on when you go, traffic could slow you down.

Overall Seattle is a hell hole for driving enthusiasts. Bad/super slow/timid/poorly trained drivers, state patrol everywhere on state roads and interstates, stupid speed limits, traffic, lack of nearby good driving roads, a culture of driving is bad and driving fast is worse, roads in poor condition... I could go on.
