Closing the hood after pedestrian protection triggered
I was unfortunate to hit a dog at really slow speed. The dog run off into the park and the owner was nowhere in sight. There in no visible mark on the bumper but the bonnet popped up at the hinges. By all means I hope the beast found its way home and is ok. However I'm stuck with a raised bonnet and a bill to pick up.
First things first, does anyone know how close the bonnet? The actuators are still pushing it up and I don't know if there's a way lower it back to normal? Simply pushing it down doesn't work. Secondly, I have yet to call the local specialist or the dealer about repair cost. From what I found it's not going to be cheap. Unless something else is damaged by PPS, replacing the hinges and clearing the error code seems like an easy job. Would save some cash and I might find second hand hinges in matching colour. I've got the skills and tools, may lack some knowledge. Would the sensor need replacing too? |

It looks as though there is a repair kit for about £100: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Genuine-BMW.../dp/B01DSPKXG4
Part number is 41617292743 |

I'd seriously explore your options to get this done by a pro, unless you really have some experience replacing hoods. It has been a few decades for me, but there were few jobs as fussy, and needing about 6 pairs of hands at times. Bolting it up isn't the problem, it is getting it aligned in about 17 different planes of movement/panel fit. And that is where you'll discover if s/t else really did get dinged, when it won't line up (likely).

I thought I'll post an update. I spoke with someone from the body shop of the local BMW about it. There is no way to close the bonnet once the PPS pistons fired. They also told me that 8/10 times the bonnet bends and needs to be replaced too. It sounded like BS, but upon closer inspection I did see bumps on top, just above the emblem. Not easy to spot at first but once you see them... I couldn't open it so I can't tell what damage was below.
With that, it became an insurance matter. With how insurance works here, I'm stuck with 'at fault' claim and 650 quid out of my pocket. The insurance picket up my car and dropped off the courtesy car. I'm now waiting for the repairers to notify me what will be done to the car. If the repair quote is high and/or they'll need a long time to fix it (thus having to provide me with a ride), the insurer may still decide to cut costs and write off a perfectly good car. P.S.: I can't believe my car panicked and blew it self up, I wan't even near BOOTS |
