I have always wondered how effective those collapsible ASP are. They look no more substantial than an old car antenna. Obviously they must be more but I wonder if they work as well as the plain old baton.
I posted a pic of my new baton in the firearms section. The new one has a baseball bat like handle on it which my previous one did not. This thing is strong AF when extended. Would not want to get hit by it.

Monadnock is a good brand too. It's a little bigger than what I would want on my duty belt though.

Excellent point for me to ask a Q

I recently advised an ex that a knife would be a better accompaniment to her home defense than the baton (Smith and Weston) that she had to accompany her Mace (pepper spray)

So my question is - Do batons stop a determent attacker?

I know pepper sprays limitations.

Well they all have limitations, some user dependent and some chemical. Oleoresin capsicum spray doesn't always affect people; I've had partners get sprayed and brush it off like it was nothing. The baton, much like a knife, requires skill to utilize properly, and frankly I would rather utilize distance rather than attempt to close it. For a woman, I would advise her to skip the close quarter options and invest in firearms training……and a lot of it…..so she can manipulate it without thought and be proficient with it.

Been trying to talk the wife into that ^^.

She still won't go near my S&W, even if unloaded

Hopefully she'll be willing to try shooting it. A firearm is a woman's best defensive tool.

Agreed - the great equalizer - once they learn to use it. I can say, I have introduced 10-15 women to firearms in my life (at work and in my personal lives) and without exception - they all enjoyed it once they got past their fear. Everyone that did not already have access to a gun - bought one.

One even wanted to try shotgunning and took up league shooting with us for over a year.

They usually take right to it once they get past that initial fear!

She has no problem w/skeet shooting, and grew up with hunting rifles, but I think the compactness of the handgun is a different level of fear for her

Start out with a .22LR handgun, and a few trips to the range if you're not in NY State. Rimfire .22 ammo is cheap enough to throw down range for an hour or so without needing a second mortgage, and she will quickly overcome the hesitation.

FWIW, I bought my DW a Ruger SR22 as her first handgun. Under-sized for an EDC, but better than nothing when combined with regular practice at the range.....

I bought my wife a Ruger MKIII for her first pistol, she used it to develop her firearms proficiency, then I bought her a S&W 686, she loves the thing and can manage 6" groupings at 20metres all day long. She doesn't care for shooting my Glock though.

I’m not afraid of handguns. I just liked it better when he was in the house with his and I didn’t have to think about it. I’m like Annie Oakley with rifles, but for some reason I was never good with a hand gun. I haven’t looked into it but I think it’s a big deal to get a permit in good ole NYC. I’m sure if I went to the range I’d be as good with a handgun as I am with a rifle. I know how to handle them. I’m just not a good shot.

Good spot dude. My work has seen me abroad a lot, so this one is about a girl in America I still hold dear.

She lives in Georgia - no one covered the actual question. Is a baton effective? Even from the UK stand point I can`t see it`s value!

I think i should just buy her a gun (send the money) but I don`t really trust her to feed her cat, let alone not accidentally shoot her own foot nbut that's me being rude.

wtf?

Okay i`ve asked about baton v gun (what a tit) - I may have fucked up heavily - I`m British, arming myself with a stick is a declaration of WAR!

So put your gun away (make sure the safety is on, wouldn`t want you shooting a ball off) and lets try and help me guide this strong female to a place of freedom!

Q. How far into the ocean do we have to go to dispose of an object - that you need to sink and not float - for it to be considered in international waters?

Kelp beds are better for disposing of bodies

At one point international waters were 200 miles, but I recall gambling on a cruise ship at 12

OK, you're British but you speak English. You question your girlfriends ability to feed her cat and are afraid that she will shoot herself in the foot if she has a gun. Is that accurate?

Handguns are significantly harder to shoot accurately than rifles.

Yeah, I've introduced quite a few women to it as well, and the hottie attorney referenced in the dating thread has become quite proficient with her S&W Shield……as well as the two AR15 pistols I built for her.
