Gimme a crash course on this car

What do I need to know about the M235i?

Let's say I'm interested, and it will be my daily. I never plan on changing the turbos - ever. I want it to be reliable, I want it to be fun, and I don't think I'll ever go catless.

Best tunes (I'm leaning BPC)
Anyone do MILVs on the N55?
Gas milage respectable?

Anything to look out for?

Hey, man. Wet-behind-the-ears newbie here.

I just recently (3 months ago) got my first BMW in a '16 F22 M235i. The car is bone stock (for now...), not counting the aesthetic pieces added, so I can't comment on tunes.

I can comment on gas mileage though... It's fair to say that the mileage isn't really respectable. On a full tank, I get around 300km (~190miles) out of it. The reading tells me that the fuel consumption is currently sitting at 5.1km/l (~12 US mpg). My daily commute involves multiple sub-10km trips with a few steep inclines and dips (making the return journeys just as bad) so bear in mind that your mileage might vary (pun intended ).

However, all said and done, I am thoroughly enjoying this car and it is an absolute blast to drive and I'm always looking forward to the weekend drives. The only thing that bothers me is that people outside my car get a much better audio stimulation than I currently do. If I could somehow drive my car with my head behind the tailpipes, I would... It's pushing me towards getting an MPerf exhaust or even just a DP for now.

I bought one - got about 340+miles to the tank. Not upset about that!

Oh yeah? Car has a few Bolt ons, I may swap some things around. A good IC that works on the street without causing excess lag?

I’ll take a look and see what you have!

VRSF is easily the best bang for buck FMIC. Installed it myself in about 2 hours. BM3 so far is making the most power with the stock turbo. If you want to go minimal mods, grab a JB+, takes about 30 seconds to install and you will see a very noticeable difference in your low end.. Intake is basically for sound, and when you turn the boost up with the JB, its turbo/air sucking heaven.

If you're going to go with a lower end piggyback, I'd recommend the Dinan Sport Tune over the JB+ just for the ability to control all boost functions on the fly via BT phone app. You can go from stock boost up to +4psi and down to -3psi valet mode with a push of a button. That alone is worth the extra $100 premium vs the JB+ in my opinion.

Questions for you gents -

Looks like there is a JB4/JB+ installed on here. How do you get it off without bricking the car?

And with BM3 can I get something like a BPC tune if I wanted to?

The JB+ just plugs into 1 sensor so you just unplug and reconnect the factory harness. No need to disconnect battery. I'm not familiar with the JB4 but it seems easy and straightforward looking at the installation instructions: http://www.burgertuning.com/instructions/JB4PnP.pdf

and here's videos on how to: http://www.burgertuning.com/N55_JB4_...BMW_tuner.html

I strongly suggest researching this site and Google and Youtube it? We appreciate all the interest and excitement but everything you're asking has been covered so many times on this site. It pays to do your own research both on this site, the F30 forum (N55 section), and Google. Asking very general questions WILL NOT get you all the necessary information to make an informed decision.

Are you still running the JB+ with your BM3 tune? Wasn't sure if the JB+ got the same logging capabilities as the full JB4.

JB+ is just a boost increasing device without any intelligence or logging behind it. Great simple solution if all you want is a quick and easy 30hp.

For the longest time all I had on my car was an intake and JB+, it was plenty sufficient.

You should not stack the JB+ with anything else, especially a BM3 tune.

Thanks, that's what I thought. I previously have only seen guys stacking JB4 monitoring + chip tunes, but I saw a JB+ listed on bryan_f22 profile so just wanted to verify.

You should not stack tunes unless you are full bolt on, and logging.

PPL have been doing this since n54 days.

Almost every person on this board with port injection is stacking a JB4 with a dme flash tune, so not sure what this guy is talking about.

I have had a jb+ ontop a flash tune for 3 years, no issue. Depends on your map and tuner tho.

Good to know! Is your build list on your profile still current, or do you have a specific build thread?

serious question, what is the purpose of stacking them? The Jb+ just as a boost controller and flash to control everything else or?

I have BM3 and am using the JB4 for meth control and extra boost with the meth. Bryan is 100% right about the logging - if you are going to do this logging is an absolute must as there is a lot of tweaking to get everything right.

OP, try the OTS maps with BM3 first. If you want to go custom BPC is a BM3 shop and I got one of their maps about a year ago.

If you haven't taken the JB4 off yet DO disconnect the battery. It is not very 'electrically durable' and you could cook the main processor on the JB4. Trust me I did it and had to order another from BMS. JB+ is probably a different story - I think it just connects to the MAP sensor.

Jb4 yes, Jb+ I will question it. Why stack a simple boost controller on top of a flash tune that will control boost for you?

Hey man I have got my 14 m235i RWD for the past 2 years as a CPO. Currently has 76k miles on it. at 47k mile the major damage was a crack on my gas tank. Dealership replaced it under warranty.
I kept it stock for the most parts but recently just got BMS Stage 1 and it is really awesome. Next thing I plan to do is to replace the charge pipe with an aluminum pipe. Thanks to Mike at Extreme Power House for the order and it's on the way. Stock CP is plastic and it will break eventually. Better safe than sorry right .
I saw some posts up here saying that the turbo might go out at 110k miles. So maybe it's the next Christmas list?
