Powder Coat or Plastic-Dip stock factory wheels...

Has anyone powder coated or plasti-dipped their stock factory wheels? If so will you please post pictures? I believe the 228i M-Sport wheels will look great finished in black. Does anyone plan on customizing their stock factory wheels.

If I don't go with powder coating my wheels, I'd like to find wheels with a copper finish.

Spend the money and have them painted/powder coated.

Cool

Even though i'm a fan of Matte Black wheels, I'm considering going with a gloss black powder coat on my factory M-Sport wheels

I did my rims as my first project/experiment with plasti-dip, pretty simple, followed youtube tutorials. Used a can per wheel at $6 a piece from my local Walmart, took me about 3 and a half hours and 6 beers. They aren't perfect due to my inexperience using the stuff, but to the naked eye it's pretty hard to see any imperfections. For the cost and ease I guess I can't really complain. That picture I just took shows about 1,800 miles worth of wear, tear and brake dust on the dip, no washes and has also been exposed to a decent amount of rain, snow and street salt. They've held up excellently. I would do it again without a question.

so far we have three types of black: matte, satin, and gloss. any others? i'm thinking i take the stock grilles and plastidip them, as well as the roof, mirror caps, and wheels.

How much would you expect to pay for powder coating the m235i stock wheels?

I was quoted $600 (and 5 days) for powder coating and $500 (and 1 day) for painting.

I love the gloss black! Thanks for posting that pic. Great job on the calipers. I'm of the thinking Yellow calipers may look good as well...

Given the choice, I'd go with the powder coating.

I ended up going with paint because:

1. I didn't want to be without a car for 5 days
2. the shop said painting held up almost as well and if you did chip or scuff it with paint you could retouch, but with powder you have to re-powdercoat the whole wheel

Number 2 there isn't correct. I have a bodyshop that sends me all their wheel work because the paint doesn't hold up as well, and you can touch up powdercoat with liquid paint.
The only downside to powdercoat is that the wheels need to be dismounted and remounted and balanced afterwards.

Looks great in gloss black! That rim is really growing on me, especially in gloss black. I wish it was a 19!

Thanks guys! For sharing those pictures.

Painted, powder coated or plasti-dipped. Which one last longer? Or which color/paint last longer?

The powdercoated to gloss black looks like BMW factory make quality to me Awesome!

Plastidip will fade in about a year or so, but is removable, so you can change your mind if you don't like it.
Paint will scratch easier, especially when they dismount and remount new tires
Powder is a polyester plastic and is the most durable and long lasting.

OEM finish is usually a powder based primer, followed by a liquid paint silver and then clearcoated with powdercoat. Its hard to get the depth with silver powder that they can get with liquid.

For those who did powdercoating, I assume the tires have to come off. Does the shop do this or did you get them taken off before bringing them in?
