I'm already driving my next car past my M235i. When I moved to Florida the end of 2016, my M235i went from being my 4th car at my place in Maine to being my only car for 3/4 of the year - it didn't make sense to not take the not paid for yet under warranty car to Florida. But as an only car it sucked. So I traded it in on a '17 GTI Sport. Which while no BMW, is utterly fantastic in it's own special way. And while being 90% as good to drive as the M235i, it is roughly 5000% better at hauling toilets home from Lowe's and flatpack kitchens home from IKEA. Not as fast, but still WAAAAY more than fast enough. And of course, 1/2 the price.

I do miss iDrive and that silken six though.

I think there is a decent chance the GTI will be my last ever new car. Just nothing out there new that interests me at all, and too many older car that do.

My M240i is the daily, so the replacement will be for the same, probably
a slightly used Alfa Romeo Giulia QF would be first choice, an M2C if the trade in offer was decent, or an outsider would be a Toyota Supra.

Wagons have been scarce for years in the US, and the likelihood of an M Sport wagon is vanishingly small. Dream on!

I'm debating between an M240i (auto) or a Camaro SS (manual) as a weekend car primarily since I work from home.

having owned a 2015 manual c7 and now having an m240i xdrive I thought I'd share my thoughts on your debate

Camaro pros:
v8 sound and torque
normal aspiration (although gm torque management makes for lazy throttle responde)
nice manual tranny

m240i pros:
compact size
great visibility
higher refinement
nicer interior

if it was m240i manual vs camaro I would go with the m240i

I drove a used ‘17 M240i manual recently. Day before drove a Camaro 1SS manual. The 240 while good, just didn’t push my buttons with the manual. Throws were longish, shifter kinda rubbery, power was good but considerably less violent than the SS.

I then drove a used 340i automatic. I was so impressed with that engine and transmission that now I’m going to test an almost base ‘19 240 auto. The 3 is too big for what I want. Dealer will knock off about $5k on the 240 also. Still the SS is about $7-8k less and I am a bit of a sucker for V8 sounds.

You also probably won't be able to get a V8 in the near future. It's why I'd consider a mustang.

I love the throw of my gearbox, I wish the lag was a bit less. I think the b58 fixes that though.

I agree, that there is something to be said for a hatchback's utility. We have a Mini Cooper S w/ a JCW tune sharing garage space w/ the M240i. The Mini is our "hauler" and w/ the tune is plenty fast and a blast to drive.

Wife and I often talk if we had to keep just one car, it would be a "Sophie's Choice" moment. In the end, I think the Mini would be the car we'd keep. Fun factor, MPG (10+ more tan the M240i) and utility giving it the edge.

Thankfully we do not have to pick and choose between the two. The BMW gets lighter duty, and is our sunny day car and "blvd cruiser".

We will likely always have a Mini (or hatchback of some sort) in our stable as well. A new car that intrigues me is the new Hyundai Veloster "N". 2019 will have a DCT added to that car's option list. Veloster will have more power. longer warranty and lower pricing than the Mini, so that may be a possibility going forward. I do like the fact that the Mini is a "BMW-lite" and is very nicely appointed, but will give the Hyundai a long look before the next purchase.

Nearing 50 and I think my sports/sporty car days are over after this one. My wife was out of town last week so I drove her SUV last week to work. It was so less stressful to drive. Easy to get into, rides smooth, quiet, don't have to worry about potholes, not worrying about people screwing with it, etc. I really hope I can become one of those people that buys a car and drives it for a long time, 35 years of car ownership says that it's unlikely though. I'm hoping in a couple of years the electric market has a lot more choices.

I will never sell my m235. Way too cool of a car.

I bought an S54 E36 M3 to keep the m235 off the track so it stays pretty.

Next vehicle will most likely be something large with towing capabilities.

This is why I just traded my 228i in for a loaded Luxury Package F31 328xi wagon. My tune and drop in aFe filter transferred right over.

Nice choices - I think for me apart from a P car, one requirement would be what cars offer a stick shift - I want that until I am not physically able to drive it.
