Clicking sound : under rear speaker

When going over small bumps or unevenness on the road, there is a distinct clicking sound emanating from the rear speaker area.
It sounded like it is coming from between the black felt wooden (?) platform which the speakers are mounted and the metal cover from inside the trunk.

I cannot reproduce it at will. Usually after about 10-15 mins driving, the sound will show up when driven on a service road at 35 mph or slower. It's most distinct in an indoor parking lot.

Any idea what the root cause is? I unlocked the rear seats and laid in the trunk while another person drove the car and I could pinpoint the sound coming from under the speaker area.

If it's not and electronic sound emanating from the speaker itself, which could be checked by turning off the radio, it may be loose mounting bolts and the speaker bouncing. You may have to open it up to actually physically see what's going on.

No, it's not from the speaker itself.
It sounded like two pieces of solid metal knocking each other.

This is my 4th Bimmer, never had so many issues with weird sounds until this one. It's a CPO car, so I will get the shop to look at it.

It's probably the car seat latch covers on the back package tray. I had a similar issue that only occurred when it was really warm. This fix was to cut some thin strips of electrical tape and place them at the contact points under the top cover. The noise drove me absolutely mad before the fix as I it was near impossible to tell where it was coming from.

Well, I got my wife to drive it around with the rear seats unhooked and completely flat.
I laid on the flat rear seats and I could pin point the sound coming out from under the right rear speaker. But, there is an entire metal casing enclosing the speakers with 4 large bolts.

I guess if I'm itching to find out why, I can remove the 4 bolts and see what happens?

And, yes, I agree, it is temperature dependent. If it's 90 degrees F and above, it is easier to reproduce the sound than when it is under 70 degrees.

I think I've heard of people pushing s/t up from the trunk to keep that parcel shelf from rattling against the underlying metal. IIRC, they pushed foam blocks up through access holes on the underside. I also find that these cars 'throw' sound like crazy, so I've had a couple of mystery noises that ended up coming from a very different place than I thought they were.

Were you able to find and fix this? I have what sounds like the exact same problem. Planning to take it to the dealer this week.

I have not taken it in yet because it’s quite tricky trying to reproduce it at will.
It looks like the ambient temperature has to be high (ie above 85 degrees) and the road surface has to be bumpy.

I think my car recently started this too. Is it a ticking type sound as if two pieces of plastic keep clanking on each other like a tick, tick, tick? I know it's from my rear driver side, I just can't figure it out. I've never had so many irritating issues in my previous 2 BMW's. This one has been in the dealership 6 times total so far for squeaky seat, clunking suspension, creaky steering wheel, and now this ticking sound just started! Quality has definitely been skimped on compared to my old Z3 and E92.

Same here. I finally scheduled an appointment this week because there are a few other things I want looked at. I'll follow up afterwards with what they find if anything.

I just picked up a used 2016 228i, auto, 17" tires 26,000 miles from my dealer.
I had a sound that is similar on the way home with it. Impossible to recreate at will.
Sounds like I've picked up a rock in the tire treads. Click, click, click for 15 seconds or so and then it's gone. I can find nothing on the tires. I would say it came from the right rear area. It's been hot here in Phoenix. I'll play around with it this weekend to see if I can find anything. I'll let you all know.

The sound you were hearing seems like it was coming from the outside.
The sound in mine is originating from the inside; specifically, from under the rear speaker. I have actually put down the seats, laid underneath the speaker while my wife drove around.

How to remove rear deck?

Does anyone know how to remove the rear deck where the speakers are mounted?
I don't seem to be able to find any bolts to remove it.

I've brought my car in at least 3 different occasions for noise fixes. The result? 0 fixes. Noise cannot be reproduced at dealership so I've just learned to deal with it.

I think this could be the source ... the locking latches of the rear seats banging against the metal loop.

I stuck a felt sticker around the metal loop (as prescribed by the video) and the clicking dropped by like 70%.
There are still some clicking but when they do show up, they are significantly more subdued and definitely less frequent.

I could be on to something.

I was wrong. When the temperature goes up, the sound returned.
Side forces do not cause it but fwd/backward forces do.
